My child is 5 years old, has had type 1 diabetes since 17 months of age. Beginning about 7 months ago he had a sudden episode of breathing difficulties. He is too young to describe but he would take long deep breaths in, raising his shoulders and head during breathing, and would breathe this way 1-3 days at a time. This has improved somewhat, the episodes are much less frequent but he still has constant shortness of breath, nausea, stomach pain and headaches daily, abdominal distention, constipation, itchy skin (feels like bug bites) unexplained arm and leg pain, and excessive night sweating. Beginning at the same time he has had a recurrent ear infection at least once a month.
He also can not stand to have his head touched or hair brushed because he says it hurts. His fingers and toes get very cold to the touch occasionally. His blood sugars rise for no reason, he is not ketoacidotic, urine ketones are almost always negative except when he has a fever (usually related to ear infection) Routine blood tests come back normal with slight elevation of %lymph.
During pregnancy I consumed aspartame and paxil daily, both of which I was not informed of the risks until late in pregnancy.
I have taken him to an allergist, ENT, cardiologist, and endocrinologist but no-one has any idea of what the cause may be. I am frustrated with "symptom treating" rather than finding the true cause and fear it will get worse before the true cause is found.
If anyone has any suggestions of possible conditions or testing I would greatly appreciate it.
