no one cares anymore...

I am a mother in desperate need for answers and no one cares. I cant get anyone to give me information regarding my 5yr olds EEG. Both times were abnormal with spikes on left side of brain. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Brain tumor? Epilepsy? never had a seizure or shown symptoms of intracranial pressure. Could this be nothing? I sure do hope so.
please help, please.

Well it started when his tyrosine was high for quite a while (approx 4 months) therefore he was tired and feeling really "sick". His teacher told me she thought he may be having petit mal's because he would just stare into space. Thats why i did the EEG. He has never showed any signs or symptoms of any type of seizure activity nor has he "blanked out" around me. I watched him day and night for around 5 weeks after that but still nothing. So when his EEG's came back abnormal i freaked out a little wondering what it could be. I asked doc's, they said nothing. I asked and asked and still nothing so i did lots of reaserch online and found that its not proven but studies have shown that high tyrosine can effect brain activity. Iam counting on this to be whats happening to my son. So, although there are 2 abnormal EEG's, he shows no signs of intracranial pressure to make me think it may be tumor, nor any signs of seizure activity to make me assume its epilepsy. Fingers crossed its just a hickup in his life. Any one got any other explanations, advice, comments? I sure do appreciate all the information I can get to explain this situation.

I just gotta say that your child needs to be referred to a pediatric neurologist for an evaluation.  Your doctor is assuming he's got the run-of-the-mill variant on an EEG, and yet he says it could be anything from epilepsy to a tumor, and leaves you holding that bag of bad news.  Now, the real question to ask yourself is, did you bring your child in because something seemed amiss, or did you just come in for a normal recheck on his tyrosine levels, and when they told you about the EEG, it sort of freaked you out.  If you brought in your boy because something seemed wrong, then most definitely get that referral to a specialist.  Also, next time you go in to see a doctor, please bring someone with you, because when a lot of information comes out of a physician's mouth, it's hard to digest it objectively, and it's hard to express your concerns because they are so rushed all the time, and it would help to have someone with you to help you figure out what is going on here.

I was told he had abnormal reading on EEG. The sleep deprived EEG also showed the same as the first one, abnormal reading with spikes on the left side of the brain. That's all I was told! I asked questions over and over like..'Plz tell me what this indicates or what your are suspecting' all i got was it could be anything from epilepsy to brain tumor!
Iam feeling scared, scared and scared to death!
My son suffers from a metabolic condition called Tyrosinaemia Type 1 and when his tyrosine levels rise too much it MAY cause abnormalities in brain activity. Thats just through my own research not information given to me by my sons medical staff. ITS LIKE NO ONE CARES.  I gotta do all the begging and pleading to understand and try to help him. It sadens me that my sons only advocate is me...

Hi,

How are you?
Spikes in the EEG do not always indicate epilepsy, some of them are normal variants are completely benign.
Small sharp spikes (SSS) are sometimes seen in normal healthy individuals and are considered a normal variant.
6 hz spikes or phantom spikes and wicket spikes are also considered to be non pathological.
What was the indication for EEG examination?

Why didnt the person who gave you the results tell you what they mean?  What does the neuologist say that ordered the test?  That is very bizarre...do you have a follow up appt?  Maybe they want to discuss it with you then.
I will say, in my own experience, that if a test comes back indicating anything serious, they will contact you right away.  If they arent saying anything, its probably not serious.  I would be very aggressive though, with them (docs)...You poor thing, you must be worried sick!!
Good luck - Kitty
