Air coming out of my incision!

Recently had knee arthroscopy. Why do I have air coming out of my incision everytime I I bend my knee and fluid build up? Sometimes the fluid is red and sometimes it's tan and sometimes it's pink. It's this normal?

Hi!
No, it is not normal. Either there is a connection of the insides with the skin or there is an infection with the air produced due to the infection. The fluid coming out will need to be cultured. Also, your doctor needs to examine the knee for infection, bleeding and fistula formation. Call your doctor immediately. Take care!

The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history. Hence this reply to your post should only be considered as a guiding line and you must consult your doctor at the earliest for your medical problem.

Thank you so much. I was disappointed how my doctor approached this. I asked if he needed to drain the fluid or somehow let the air out but he said it will go away in time and then he stitched back up my incision. It has been a week or so since my second set of stitches has been take out and when I flew my knee I can see there is pressure building up. My dad (who is s doctor) said its just fluid build up in the joints but it should go away in a month. I'm still worried its air and bad fluid trapped in my knee. I know nothing about this and it could be nothing. On the other hand, I appreciate you taking you're time to help me. You truly did reassure me that it was not normal and I had every right to freak out...as my dr made me feel like a hypochondriac. Thank you again
