Calcaneal Bursitis

I hope I'm in the right forum for this. I was just diagnosed with having Calcaneal Bursitis in my heel. It can get pretty painful, especially in the mornings when I first get up. The doctor told me to ice it, take an anti-inflamatory and rest when it's bad, and that they can give shots if it gets really bad. Is that really all that can be done? Am I going to have this off and on for the rest of my life then? It's been going on this whole last year. And can I exercise ok with this? Is walking and/or running ok? I stopped exercising for so long and I really want to get back in to it.
Can anyone explain to me what exactly it is and what causes it? The Podiatrist didn't talk to me for long and I'd love some more information if anyone can help me.
Thank you.

Hi,
How are you? Usually 6-12 months of conservative treatment will resolve the condition, but regular follow ups with x-rays should be done to see for any complications like bone spurs. If found to have bone spurs surgical management, will be considered.
Consult a orthopedician for further assistance.
Best.

Thank you for answering, Dr. Veena. How long should I give it to get better before checking for bone spurs? It's already been going on for several months. And if I did have bone spurs what would be the next step? Thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for writing. Calcaneal bursitis is an inflammation of the covering around the Calcaneal bone, which can occur due to wear and tear, repeated injury due to excess stress, exercise like walking or jogging etc. It is extremely painful on rising in the morning and decreases in intensity during the day.

Most cases of Calcaneal bursitis can be treated successfully with conservative treatment, life style modifications and physical therapy. If pain is not relieving with conservative measures, then a check for bone spurs needs to be done and appropriate treatment for the same.
