I had a clean break of my fibula about 4 inches above my ankle.

I was in a soft cast from ER for 2 days then had surgery on the 3 day of the break. (6 screws 1 plate to position the break) in a hard cast now..

Was totally off my leg for a week (bathroom and move from bed to couch)

10 days after the break 8 after surgery I went out for the first time. My foot was very swollen probably not the best idea (A&M was playing and beating highly ranked Nebraska)

Stayed elevated as much as possible again for 3 days until my follow up from my surgery which was at the time 11 days after my surgery and right at 2 weeks from the break.

They took off the hard cast from surgery x-rays looked good so they gave me a big boot that has 5 velcro straps and pads to put around the ankle to stabilize.

Now 19 days after the break of the fibula and 16 after surgery I took my first attempts at walking and was able up put full pressure on the foot holding my self up only on the injured leg. Very limited walking but should get better every day from here on out. The stiffness and brusing is going down and as it goes the walking gets easier.

My next check up 16 more days from now (32 from surger 35 from break)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
The cast used should be perfect, not too tight and not too lose, then it will allow proper bone healing as undisturbed and proper immobilisation is required for perfect healing of bone. Your skin outer epidermis normally regenerates in 4 weeks, till you have a scar or any other problem there is nothing to worry and your skin will be alright once the cast is removed and it is just a matter of time. Take care!

I have been miserable in a cast for the past 6 weeks due to a sprained ankle and broken foot :(  I found that I was getting very bad dry skin around the toe area of the cast..At night I would take a wash cloth and rub it softly with soap and then apply vaseline..My foot is still in the cast but the skin around my toes and bottom of my foot is soft and nice..Just a thought if you care...

Hiya, good for u LOL!!! It will take a GOOD year after this type of bone repair, or any break for that matter to be FULLY healed.
I have been walking on mine since about 3rd week post-op @ home only. No pain, I can only feel the plate in the distal fibula close to the foot. It stings when pressure it put upon it or the cast has been against it all day. Whenever I went out, I always wore the aircast. You must remember LOL....... This same ankle I have had one triple break, then a year after that I had to have my ankle rebroke, cut it wide open and cut into the tibib (Chinbone) to remove a bone cyst. AFTER this, I had the latest break in March. So this is the 3rd break for this ankle and the second surgery, plus I have cancer, so I am sure that this has something to do with the lack of healing.

WOW, I wish you luck, take care

Hiya, Ok ok I had my 5.5 week checkup @ the Ortho clinic Tuesday 30th AM. Doc said all looks ok, keep cast on one more month. Start to walk on it and take off and exercise it @ home more!! Woooo hoooooooo I have to go back in 6 weeks time. I am sched. to see him again on Nov 18th.

Lemmo know how you get on with your healing
All the best Elizabeth

How can you tell what, when you step on your foot?? If it is ok? OR if it is not healed? You cannot, really. If you go too long and not have it healed properly, you could eventualy tear ligaments ect, PLUS the huge factor of getting arhritis in it, that will happen for sure.

Hi Guys,

I had a double spiral break in my fibula in March of 2008. (Dogsledding accident!!) Hospital only put on a cast as there was no Ortho Surg. in Algonquin @ this time. When I returned home several days later, my local hospital saw me in the Ortho clinic. They ONLY changed the cast so that the foot would be in the correct position. I had cast on: March 17th to April 24th. IT DIDN"T HEAL @ ALL!!!!! So, they schedualed me for surgery. I had the surgery on: August 20th/08. Doc cut bone to freshen it, put a plate on and 7 screws and a bone graft, they put it in a partial cast with tensor and @ 2weeks post-op they took out the 14 staples and put me in an aircast. While I was waiting for this surgery I was walking on it all of the time. AFTER the surgery, I was told to keep off of it, until doc says it is OK to put weight on it. I am due to go to see doc on Sept 30th @ the 5.5 week mark. Can't wait to see the x-rays!!!
The fibula ONLY supports 10% of the bodys weight, this is how you can still operate on it. But trust me, if you do NOT get it fixed, this will be a HUGH problem for you in a short while. Arthritis will set in. I have had 3 breaks in this same ankle and 2 surgeries.

Vitamin D-3 + a Calcium/magnesium supplement will help. Also, real orange juice. DO exercise when you are able to to get the blood moving to the area. DON'T walk on it, till doc says OR it WILL NOT HEAL!

Goodluck
Elizabeth

I'd like to know the answer to your fibula question as well.  My fibula has been in two complete pieces for almost a year now.  My surgeon says that you don't need a fibula.  Don't you love it?  Then he lied to Social Security and told them that the bones had healed.  It still looks like a broken bone, feels like a broken bone and I think the medical field is failing miserably at everything but collecting money.
