How do I know if I have ligament damage in my neck, does it heal on its own?

In the neck region you can have Para-spinal muscle weakness and nerve compression causing symptoms. Which ligament damage are you thinking of? What are your symptoms?

My 15yr old son has broken neck (C-7) and over 50% torn ligaments from C-1 to C-7... At the moment, docs have him in a CTO for 2+ mo and then he will go to diff neck brace, they are hoping he will heal and not need surgery because of his age.
Does this sound like proper treatment?? Anything we need 2 watch 4?? Neck was broken 2 wks ago.. I just want to make sure we are doing correct thing with him! any help would be great!
