1.8 cms cyst on right ovary, need advice

All,

I feel pain once in a while and I went for a full pelvis scan and i was diagnosed with a cyst on the right ovary and fluid in POD. The doctor suggested to be on loestrin ( contraceptive ) for 3 months and then scan again. The doctor also mentioned its a common thing among many women. I have a son who is 1.5 years old and I have been having this pain since he was born for last 1 year or so.

Now, I feel reluctant to take the contraceptive pill, due to the kind of side effects it could cost. Fully against this pill.

Is this the right thing to do ?

The only test that I had taken was the full pelvic scan, when I had a scan about a month ago, I was told there is a small fluid in POD and cyst for 1.8 cms. The Doctor suggested to be on pills and then come back and test in three months suggesting that this may go away and I am too young - 21. so not to worry about it. My pain is not constant, its on and off, atleast once every week, and its not severe at all. I will check on doing the PCOS scan. thanks

Yes unless you suppress ovulation with HRT's.

Good point DrWallander :) This could also be possible.

Have you been tested for PCOS? Otherwise known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome? I was diagnosed with PCOS a little over four months ago, and since then have had multiple cysts. My case is extremely severe, and I need to remove my right ovary due to bruising. I also have endometriosis. Cysts are very common in both of those disorders. I would recommend looking into getting a test for PCOS as well. I am a doctor, so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. That would be my first bit of advice though, getting those tests done.

Well I am on Marvelon and it is a low dose BCP and I don't have any side effects and I have been on it for 7 yrs.

What is the size of the cyst?

I think the worry would be if it was endometriosis because it could affect your tubes and make you infertile. So I would be more worried about that than the cyst itself.

Thanks. Even tho i get pain sometimes, I am not at the moment ready to take the pills and go thru its side effects. Will the cyst of my size affect my ability to have my second baby ?

Yes it is supposed to reduce pain as well as periods. The only way is lap surgery to remove it and any Endo and continue on the pill.

I am not a doctor but it does sound like it could possibly be Endometriosis if there is fluid in the POD. My Endo became 100% worse and more painful after the birth of my child. The pill is the best option to take continuously without missing a pill to see if the cyst shrinks and if it helps take away the pain since you wont be having anymore periods.
