7 cm ovarian cyst.. What should be done...

Hi
I went to a fertility specialist cause we are having trouble getting pregnant and when the doctor did a transvaginal u/s of my ovaries she found a cyst which was 7cms in diameter... so based on your experience do you think this cyst should come out? does it affect fertility and what is the chances of it being cancerous... I have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer since Mar 2007.

Thanks,
Karen

What kind of thyroid cancer did you have and was it on both sides? My wife had a nodule on her thyroid and turned out to be cancer 14 years ago and she had to remove part of her thyroid. It usually is the procedure, however, she takes thyroid medicine and never had an issue with it. It usually is not a scary cancer and does not matestasize. Check with your doctor and get it taken care of so that you can move on with your life. In regards to your cyst, your doctor can do a biopsy of the cyst to find out if it is anything worrying. My wife is currently going through the same thing and she had an ultrasound that showed an enlarged right ovary and a ruptured cyst filled with lbood, so she has to have another ultrasound in 6 weeks to see if it has changed. She may have to consider removing her ovary or both, however, it all depends on the outcome of the ultrasound and maybe even a biopsy if required before a more aggressive approach is taken.
The cyst has nothing to do with fertility and women always have cysts come and go and most of the time they dont know it and they do not cause any discomfort, however it is always better to get it checked thoroughly and not to ignore it when found, especially if it is not fluid filled. We are told that fuild filled cysts are very common. This is only our knowledge and experience and in no way an expert's opinion.

Charly
