8cm Ovarian Cyst

I have a 8cm cyst on my right ovary, with constant discomfort from it. I'm confused to whether I will undergo surgery, because at the moment, my doctors have told me little to nothing about what they are going to do for me, other than have routine ultra sounds. Will I have to have surgery or not? And if the cyst continues to grow, what will be the result?

Get that cyst out! I have had 5 rupture since I was 19 and it ruined my life for years! I have cysts around 5cm or larger at all times...no diagnosis and atleast a dozen Drs... I will always be in pain and thought I was infertile for years bc of it. I actually went to today to schedule a hysterectomy and by the grace of God a new dr walked in, gave me a personalized plan and hopefully this time next year I will be on fertility meds and finally conceiving a baby! I still can't stop crying or wrap my head around it but I'm begging you, don't let it get that far! See as many Drs as it takes and take care of your reproductive system! It impacts a lot more than you realize!wishing you the best!

My last ultra sound was maybe a month ago and my next one is in about two weeks. Thank you so much for the very useful information! I'll try and keep posted here with later updates.

8cm is fairly large. Typically, they don't want them to get much bigger because you can end up with ovarian torsion which can be very painful and choke off blood supply to the ovary causing it to die. But at the same time, you do not want to undergo surgery unnecessarily. Not only are there the typical surgical risks but far too often ovaries are removed versus just the cysts (cystectomy). Removal of even one ovary can permanently disrupt ovarian hormone production. We need our ovarian hormones our whole lives, not just for reproduction.

When was your ultrasound and when will the next one be done? Maybe your doctor was planning to explain further after the next ultrasound. But if you are not comfortable waiting until then, a call to the office would be a good idea.
