Need surgery done finally

Hi all, I am glad I found this forum, I was lost for awhile trying to get information on what was happening to me.

I'm 32. I live in a rural area up in northern canada.  I have to fly out or bus 12 hrs to get surgery done for the 10.5-11 cm cyst on my right ovary I was diagnosed with.
I'd been living with the pain for a long time, I would go without a period for months at a time, then get some heavy ones. Kept seeing my doctor who just took blood
work and said all was fine, went to the ER multiple times over the year in pain on my right side and was told I was only ovulating, it was fine and some of them would
chuckle at it since there was nothing else wrong with me medically.

Then in Jan 09 I was hemmoraging (sp?) and had to go on pills to stop it and then proceeded to get an internal ultrasound, they found the cyst, then went for an MRI, I wasn't
told much about this, just that I had a bigg mass on my right ovary and they can't tell what it is, that it looks kinda solid and that if I get big pain to get to the ER asap.

After the MRI I went back and was told I needed to have it removed with surgery and was being reffered to a good gyno in the city.  The appt was fast, I was
happy about that...then I got the flu and had to cancel my flight..they rebooked me for Oct.5th so I took that time to spend with kids and learn about what was
going on and how I got this cyst.  I was scared to do lots of things over the summer for fear of rupture and hemmorging again and I felt left in the dark by my doctor and his secretary.
Now it's come upon the time I have to fly out for a consultation (not surgery yet) and they messed up my appointment travel, I was told that I was flying, they made
it that I have to bus, he said it was too risky for my travel by vehicle that far when he first booked me.  Flying there only takes 1hr 1/2.  I would rather take the bus than
fly lol. But it's not enough time to make it to my appt in time...now I  have been rebooked for Jan 16.  I want a new doctor because I can hardly talk to the one I have. Not
to mention the secretary told the gyno office that I was seeing him for "irregular periods" not a large cyst...so now I have to wait another 3 months to see a gyno after already waiting 4.
What questions should I ask?
Is there anything I should know?

My current doctor told me that when I go in for my surgery, it takes 10 minutes and that's it and that there are lots of ladies out there with cysts that have no idea they have them.
I am reading alot of different stories that people went through, every day I worry about rupturing and if I will be close to someone for help, I am married and have 3 teens
so that helps. I am at a loss on what I should be asking for.  I have been told by people that know somewhat about it, that it can be life threatening?  I did read through the site
here and am glad for the information and support. Also I have started making a list for what can help after surgery from what I gathered from here =)

His office is closed a lot, it's so frustrating, my husband and I are going to see how we can go about seeing another doctor. It's not that easy unless maybe I just try to go to the ER...but I do want to try to get a copy of the test results. I thought that I would get them or at least hear about them to understand it but didn't...I got more details about my teeth back when I lived in the city than I did about this!

I don't get as much pain as some of the ladies on here, but when I do, it locks me up, so I just want this over with so I can take care of my family. =/ He is closed Monday coming up so I am going to try to call our clinic to get in there.  I've had my gall bladder removed before by Laporascopy so it wasn't too bad. Laparotomy, that does sound more complicated than snip and it's out...Will do what I can to get those papers, ty Trudie.

I'd sure like a chance to slap that doctor of yours up the side over such stupidity.  A cyst as large as yours and especially if it is suspicious with solid components, will likely require a laparotomy (abdominal incision) and not a laporascopy.  It is not as simple as he is saying.  You need to get a copy of the report from your tests that indicates the size, type, etc. on the cyst.  These are your records and you are entitled to them.  Please post it here.  Is it possible to see another doctor there?  You need to be seen much sooner.
