Can a simple cyst be mistaken for complex cyst? How often is complex cyst benign as compared to simple?

I just found out I have a 4cm complex cyst on my left ovary. I thought though from looking at ultrasound that I had "regular" cyst going by what I saw on internet and what my ultrasound looked like. When I was having it done there was a black "egg" on it and I asked what it was and the girl said a cyst on my left ovary. Then later there was a whitish looking thing with weblike things or what kind of looked like fingers on it and when I asked she said that was my ovary (she did not say cyst) but when I went in to doc to get results from him he said radiologist marked it as being complex cyst. I am 35 and have no history in my family of female cancers as far as I know but am still scared it may be cancer (as I am sure most everyone is when they hear they have cyst). Well I guess they want to do another ultrasound in like 6-8 weeks. Radiologist said 12 weeks but doc said can go in 6-8. If no change then I guess may have to have operation. Which scares me a lot too! I have never had an operation in my life. Is it really bad? How many of you have had it when you were not put to sleep but like c-section type thing? Sorry so may questions. Thanks to anyone that may help.

Hi :) My symptoms have been kind of weird and not sure if related to the cyst or maybe just had a weird cycle this past month. A little after my ovulation time I started to feel kind of sick and bloated with a lot of burping (I know gross right), sore lumpy breasts and back pain (which I still have off and on) like I was pregnant or something- actually thought might be as we are ttc-  but when I started AF a few days early this month it is like most of it has gone away. Besides the back pain I do still have some burping but not anywhere near what it was. I actually was relieved to get af this month once I found out wasn't pg. Any other month I would have been crying! LOL. Now I am a few days away from when I should o again and am afraid I am going to get all that back. Ugh! My dr seems to think mine is caused from a lot of stress which does mess your hormones up. I have been trying to eliminate as much stress as I can and eat better foods and am going to get some natural herbs, etc to see if they might help. I am praying this goes away on its own. I hope the best for you too and everyone else on here.

I'm currently playing the "wait and see" game too with my doctor. Just had an US on 04/15 that found a 4cm cyst on my R ovary, and 1.5cm cyst on the L ovary...not sure if they labeled it as simple or complex. Have to wait 6 weeks for another ultrasound. Doctor didn't tell me what would happen if it's still there.   I'm having continuous pain...from dull ache to sharp. Are you having pain too?  It would be great if there was a way to prevent these from forming....I guess it all has to do with hormones...and follicles. I'm hoping to have children one day...or else I'd probably opt to have the ovaries removed.

Thanks for the info! :) It is amazing how many of us suffer from these things and that with the technology out there they have nothing to prevent them!

Hi,
It's not always certain just looking at the ultrasound which type of cyst they are dealing with. Mine was smaller and thought to be solid. However, once they got in there, it turned out to be a simple cyst. Number one thing to remember is that cysts are 95% benign and the usual course of action is to watch it for a few months.

If you are going to have it removed, don't worry about that either. They may be able to do it laparoscopically.. It's outpatient usually.. and 3 small incisions from belly button , down. You'll def. be put to sleep. You wouldn't want it any other way.... and the whole thing only takes roughly 5 hours from the time you walk into the hospital till you walk out... The recovery is only a few weeks and really isn't a bad procedure. The other procedure is a laparotomy and you may be in the hospital a little longer, and the recovery is a bit longer as well.
