Dermoid Cyst and possibly pregnant

I was diagnosed with a dermoid cyst on my right ovary, about 2.5 cm. It hasn't been there that long as I miscarried last september and I didn't have it then. I found out through a CT scan of my abdomen when they were checking my kidneys and bladder and this was the only thing abnormal. Well I went to my OB and we talked about surgery. I would have to stay a night in the hospital with a full recovery time of about 4 weeks. Well I was supposed to start my period on Saturday and it hasn't shown yet so I may be pregnant. Since I know that it has taken less then a year to get as big as it did, do you think going through with a pregnancy would be safe? I was going to schedule surgery for maybe Aug...but if I am pregnant I wouldn't be able to do it unless I abort..which I don't want to do. What would you do? Thanks for an advice, support or experience!

I didn't say anyone told me to abort...I just wasn't sure if I needed to or not. Its nice to know that I would be able to do the surgery. And I already discussed it with my OB, he told me that I can do the surgery whenever I feel comfortable doing it, just not to leave it and forget because it could harm me in the future. I know that some procedures like any that involve going under may not be suitable for pregnancy and my doctor said that he didnt do laprascopies for these procedures. I have already had a tumor removed from my breast so I am no stranger to getting things removed.

I have read your advice and understand it completely, thank you very much for being passionate about it. I started my period this morning so I am not pregnant, I was just a few days late. Maybe because of the cyst. I am most likely going to schedule the surgery for August and am going back on birth control for a few years. Thanks to everyone who replied!

who the hell told you you had to abort to have surgery???

Who is the fool - all you would have to do is wait until the pregnancy was 16 weeks which is not unreasonable is the cyst is only 2.5 cms. I am really going to worry about this post so please let me know you have read my advice!

OMG you dont need to abort if you have a cyst I nearly fainted when I read that. I have an 8cm cyst on my ovary and I am 3 months pg - they will monitor the growth of the cyst and if necessasy do surgery to remove but there is no way NO WAY you need to abort and if anyone says you do they are lying. I know lots of women that have had cyst removal and been pregnant..................

Wasn't there another post just the other day about a similar problem? Gosh, can't remember now, was it on this forum? I believe she was indeed having surgery , but think it had to be in 4th month? Don't go by me though, really unsure..You may want to scroll down to find it unless Trude remembers it..

But Trudie is very right.. first you need to find out what you are dealing with-- pregnancy or something else... And, keep us posted.

You really need to get a pregnancy test done and I believe you can test that early these days.  Some women to get irregular or missed periods with cysts so it is good to know what you are dealing with.  Your doctor will have to determine whether the cyst needs to be dealt with now or later.  I have heard of women who have had their cysts removed laporascopically while still pregnant and others who were able to wait.  I know this can be very stressful so do arm yourself with facts so you can make the appropriate decisions.  Good luck!
