Hysterectomy is over

Had my operation two weeks ago.  13 cm mucinous cystadenoma removed .  Thankfully, it was benign.  Since I am 39 and done having kids, had everything removed...tubes, ovaries, cervix and uterus.  I am so glad I had it all taken out, because I would not want to go thru this type of operation, again.  I have not started hormone therapy yet, but have only had a couple of hot flashes that were not too bad.  They removed my staples in  the hospital two days after operation and my incision opened.  Now, I am at home with a wound vac.  Visiting home health nurse suspects I will need it 10 more days.  Have been using it for 8, so far.  It is an uncomfortable experience, going from wound packing to wound vac changes, but I am so grateful not to have cancer, that this is just a momentary discomfort/ inconvenience. Sending good wishes and prayers to all awaiting surgery and diagnosis.

I just first want to tell you that I thank God for me stumbling across this site. Until two weeks ago I never knew you could grow an Ovary back after you had a hysterectomy. And now to find this site with so many of you going thru the same thing it really does help.

I am 37 and I had a radical hysterectomy almost 8 years ago. About 2 months after my surgery I went back to the GYN who did the surgery and told her I felt like I had an ovarian cyst. I knew what they feel like because before the surgery I had PCOS so I knew what this felt like she told me that I was probably feeling phantom pains. I took that answer and did not think of it any more. The pain went away but a few months later it came back. Went back to the doctor told her the same thing as the first time and she blew me off again. Well this went on for years until last year I decided to see a different doctor because I felt like my GYN was not listening to me. I saw my family doctor thinking that this pain that came and went was somrthing not related to my hsyterectomy. But now after a year and a half of tests I am finding out that I might have ORS. I had an ultrasound yesterday and it shows a 1.5cm mass on my right side and the tech said if she did not know any better that she would think it was an ovary they think it is growing cysts. I have been on hormones everyday since my surgery I am now wondering what effect has that had on me. I have never felt any effects of menapause but I thought that was due to taking hormones. they think my pain is coming from a cysts forming every now and then. I go back to the doctor on Tuesday the 24th to find out what they really think the mass is. And they are wanting to do a laperoscopy to go in and take a good look and take what ever it is out. Anyway I just wanted to say thanks for this site I can't believe how many of us have this thing. God bless you all Vickie

HI
Thank God all was benign!  When I read that you had your staples out so soon I was surprised.  I have a vertical incision as well when I had my hysterectomy last month and my staples were in for 8 days and were taken out by my MD.  Even when I had my C-sections (horizontal scars - easier healing, less time etc) they were in for 3 days and either an MD or NP took them out; taking out staples isn't something that I've ever had a nurse (who wasn't an advanced practice nurse) do.
Hopefully the wound vac will accelerate the healing but it is unfortunate that it had to get to that point.
Good luck!

Congratulations on the benign news.  I am so sorry that you have to go through such uncomfortable situation now.  Hopefully you will be able to get to the bottom of things when you go see your doctor.  I will be praying for you.  Hope you get to feeling better soon.
Hugs,
Kasie

Yes, my family and I have certainly been wondering why the staples were removed so early.  The doctor did not do it, but a fairly young nurse removed them.  I will be asking at my follow up appointment about why they took the staples out after 2 days.  It was a very long vertical incision.  I hope others going into surgery will see this and be aware and ask about when their staples will be removed.  I was so worried about the pathology before the operation, that it never crossed my mind to ask about this.  I was to out of it, on pain meds, to ask when they took them out.  My husband was
there, but it never crossed his mind, either.  Thanks to everyone for the good wishes!

Yes, that is quite early for the staples.  I had surgery June 6 and they removed half of the staples a week later and the other half 4 days later.  I hope all goes well with your healing.  Please keep us posted.

That is great news!! Congrats on the benign finding. I am so sorry to hear about needing a wound vac. I am sure the dressing changes are uncomfotable. I have honestly never heard of them removing the staples that soon after surgery. Did they tell you why they were doing this? Just curious.
