Hello, I completely understand your frustration.  It is scary finding out you have something that shouldn't be there and told to wait it out. Did you have an ultrasound or transvaginal ulrasound?  I ask because I don't believe ovarian cysts can be detected through a papsmear.     Do you know the size of the cyst or type of cysts?  If not I would ask for a copy of the report as you mind it helpful to find out more information while you "wait".
If they are 'functional' cysts they should disappear on their own, they are common and are due to an egg not being released during ovulation, but they should resolve themselves within days or a month or two, they are benign.
There are several other kinds of cysts which are almost always of benign nature but they can be problematic in that they continue to grow sometimes causing a great deal of pain, and there could be risk of rupture or twisting. Surgical treatment is usually considered if cyst is 5cm or larger. Either via laparoscope (prefered) or laparotomy for larger cysts.   Not all benign (non-cancerous) cysts will disappear on their own.
Since your doctor seems to want to do the wait and see approach,  I was told it should be checked via us or tvus every 6mths.
I hope everything works out for you, TRY not to stress too much about this and remember the majority of cyst are benign.
You mentioned you've had abnormal pap smears for the last 4 yrs have they done further testing?
Good luck and take care.

I know how scared and impatient you must feel to be told that you have to "wait". I am also 22, lost my baby @ 19 because of ovarian cancer (had the chemo, surgeries), and now I have a complex cyst in my left ovary, and I am doing the same thing "waiting" for my test results to come back. If the cysts are benign, you should ask the doctor why you are still in so much pain because if it is benign, it should go away within a few period cycles, or at least ask what you can do to relieve it. Here is some helpful reading on above: http://www.righthealth.com/topic/Do_Ovarian_Cyst_Hurt/overview/wiki_detailed?modp=Ovarian_cyst . If they do not go away on their own, (which I am sure they will if they are benign and small enough (under 5cm) that they werent even visible for such a long time or werent an immediate problem to your doctor), than ask your doctor about surgeries that arent invasive (inside of u) and require weeks of recovery and more pain. IF you can not go that route, than ask about laproscopy, it is a minimally invasive surgery and you can read up on it @ this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laparoscopic_surgery
