7cm ovarian cyst

During CT scan for upper abdom pain, a 7cm ovarian cyst was found.  I had a follow-up intravaginal ultrasound that confirmed a "large cystic mass" on right ovarie.  My NP (nurse navigator) that has been doing my yearly exams, referred me to a GYN/Oncologist.  I see her next Tues.  I have not had the CA125 test.  I'm having a lot of discomfort, heaviness in my lower abdomin, back aches, bloating etc.  My prior complaint of upper abdom pain and burning is still there.  I was also referred to a GI doc for that, who I see on Wed.  I am 58, had vagina removed in 1988 because of fibroids.  Huge family hx of cancer, but none for breast or ovary - just lung, colon, muscle, throat.  I'm still very scared about this.  Any help would be appreciated.

My cyst was 8.6 x 6.5.  I'm 46 and have had a complete hyst & ooph, as I'm past child bearing years.  The doctors (GYN, Onc & GP) and I all discussed it.  With my personal health history, it seemed better to remove ovaries, uterus & cervix because surgery is risky for me.

I'm 7 weeks post op, and everything is benign.  I'm healing from open surgery, quite well, and have been back at work now for over 3 weeks!

I hope you have a similar situation--it's good to stay on top of your doctor, ask for a script for the pain while waiting for the surgery... it definitely can help you to relax a bit, and deal with the situation with more of your brain power.

Good luck, keep us posted!

Hi,
That's a decent size cyst... I think it's great that you are seeing a Gyn/Onc. (Not that I think you have cancer but they are so very thorough and have extensive training). I totally agree with Ireneo . It very well could be benign and more than likely is, but you need to have it investigated. Please let us know how it goes for you..

Take care,
Sandy

Even benign cyst will cause symptoms similar to what you're experiencing. I had a 10 cm cyst removed this year along with my ovary and tube. However, everything came back normal. It's good that you're seeing a gyn/onc - not because you have cancer but because they are the best to treat you IF you have cancer. My gyno had an oncologist on call just in case. It was a scary thought but everything worked out well. Remember, the odds are on your side (about 95% of cysts are benign). Stay in touch and let us know what you find out in terms of CA 125, your appt. next week and of course the surgery.
