There is a calculated reduced risk of ovarian cancer if you have them both out after memopause. My Dr. was reading from some kind of statistical chart about this. I am having my right ovary out on 1/14 . The ultrasounds do not show my left ovary so maybe it has shrunk , etc., but if it seems reasonable, I want it out during the same procedure.
My right one has grown and has a cyst. I'm also having a CA125 tommorrow. Nothing to do now but sit and worry to death.
Hi,
I had only the one ovary removed.. Although I really would have liked the whole kit and kaboodle gone.. My Dr. is one of the ones that feel keeping one ovary is beneficial. However, I don't think there is an absolutely "right" answer.I'm older than most and my Dr. didn't feel that having one cyst would predispose me to another at my age.
Regarding the surgery though--- even having only one ovary removed laparoscopically, one week is sort of pushing it. Even though I felt great after a week (went to the grocery store after the post op appt.) , I wasn't permitted to drive for 2 weeks, nor lift anything heavy, nor do any strenuous cleaning, etc. Other than that, I can't see that there would be much difference after menopause..
Good luck whichever way you go with it...
I had both removed even though I had a cyst on one. I was also post-menopausal. I felt no different having them both removed and will not have to worry about future cysts.
There's much debate on this. Some will say that keeping one ovary supplies some hormonal benefit. Others will say the benefit is minimal after menopause.
As for me, I didn't want to deal with future ovary problems, so I chose to get rid of both at the same time. My gyn/onc strongly recommended removing both and said I woudl feel better without them. He was right.
