Typical Pain or Rupture Pain? - signs and differences

Hey everyone,

A couple weeks ago I had an ER CT Scan done and they found a pretty huge (20cm) cyst over my right ovary. I've seen my OBGYN, and am now scheduled for all the ultrasound work on Monday.

My question though, is about the pain of having a cyst.

I was basically pain free until about 10 days ago, and I started to get some pain in my lower abdomen/back. My doctor told me it's pretty standard to get pain in those areas when you have a cyst, especially a large one or if it's twisting something. But just the last couple days, the pain has become much worse. Don't get me wrong...I'm not laying on the floor screaming and crying in pain. But it does keep me up at night unless I take a pain killer and use a heating pad on my back. My question is basically...when should I start to worry about the pain possibly being a rupture? She told me that if it ruptured, I would know it because the pain would be GOD AWFUL. But for the most part, I have a pretty high pain tolerance...so it worries me that I might just be brushing off a rupture as typical cyst pain. Is that highly unlikely? Would the pain be so bad that I would KNOW I needed to go to the ER? I know there are a lot of other symptoms that go with ruptures...and I don't have any of those. My pain is pretty dull as long as I'm taking something for it. But as soon as it wears off...it's hard to focus. Is that a normal thing until I get this monster out of me? lol.

I'm also a heavy dieter right now. (big girl trying to lose some weight!) I'm burning about three times the calories I eat, and I'm walking/speed walking 2 hours a night. I noticed the pain increased one night after walking...Should I limit myself more?

Any advice would be great since I haven't had a chance to ask my doctor yet.

When my cyst ruptured it was like a hot sudden pain. I was screaming as well and could barely walk or tell my husband what was wrong.I felt like I had to go to the washroom as well ( pass urine ) very badly but didn t need to. I live in the main floor of a house , my sister in the basement suite. My screaming woke her up and she was up here in mere minutes to help me and my husband get to the hospital.

I think that you are keeping up with your walking is great, perhaps you are pushing yourself too much at this moment in time? Id say keep walking as much as you can but perhaps take a break and walk in shorter spurts?

Taking something to help with the pain is also normal. I did the same thing!

Good luck )

Wow, I'm so sorry you had to go through something so painful! That really, really *****. My pain was worse about a week ago. To the point of needing 2-3 pain killers a day. But now...suddenly, I'm have little to no point at all, and not taking anything. It's so weird...

I noticed that I was having all the pain during the week that's typically my cycle time. Now that the week has passed...my pain is nearly gone. But I didn't actually get my cycle on time. Just pain? Gah, so strange...

Hi tournie,
I can tell you about my pain. It was so bad I was screaming and on the floor of my bathroom. My autistic son had to call for an ambulance - what a star he was, he kept very calm and held my hand. I had pain once every 4-5 weeks - it was clearly linked to my cycle. It would start after a bowel movement early morning and once it got going nothing was going to stop it - only morphine in hospital helped, along with a host of other drugs. My consultant thought that it was probably because my cyst was twisting on itself (I think they call it 'torsion'). Shame it took so long to find out what it was - I had been tested for appendicitis, water infection, kidney stones, you name it, anything but a cyst, but that doesn't seem that unusual from what I've read on this site.
So, I don't know what a rupture feels like, but the pain I had was really bad. I only ever had the pain on one side, but I have seen other posts where ladies have said they get it both sides.

Oh, also, is it typical to get pain on both sides? Even though my cyst is on the right side, and the majority of my pain is on the right...I do get some pain on the left side every now and then. Would a huge cyst like mine just cause general pain everywhere?

I think I remember the ER doctor telling me that they can do that...
