Hi:

My husband was researching hypothyroidism today and mentioned tonight that he had read that this condition can often cause ovarian cysts.

Does anyone know anything about this? I suspect that I have this condition but I can't get the western doctors to order further tests as my TSH and maybe another test is normal.

Used to be Doctors also considered symptoms but seemingly no more.

I hate to go through surgery and then find out that a hypo or hashimoto's condition is causing this. I'm post menopausal and have a 3.5 cm cyst. I'm due to have an ultrasound again to see how it looks in there now, before surgery.

I'm sorry you have to wait so long. As mine was ruptured, they had to get it out of me right away. Good luck with your answers.
Yes, I was sick to my stomach and started passing out.

hiya thank you for your replies.

im in the UK.

the blood tests they did were to check weather it is cancerous its called  C-something?!
and an ultrasound (which found the cyst) i already knew that they would come back ok as ive had it for so long.
thats it! everything they told me they were gonna do they arnt doing now.
ive tried so hard with the doctor but he just said controlling the pain is more important. i do wonder what planet they live on half the time.

the consultant also said to me that it needed to be sorted because if it ruptures it will cause me to be really ill...so im really worried that it will happen and no one will take any notice.

In what country do you live?  What tests did they run that they consider "normal"?

The size of the cyst and the way it has pushed things around is certainly not a normal arrangement no matter how harmless or how long they think you may have had it.  It is a large foreign object putting pressure on you and causing you pain.

I feel your frustration!  Can you get a second opinion elsewhere or can you just demand more answers from whatever doctor is making you wait 6-8 months?

well ive finally got my results back, bare in mind i had to chase the doctor for them. the tests all came back normal which is a good thing. BUT he is now saying that he wants to re-scan me in 6-8 months! i was so not happy with this. i told him that my pain is becoming more server and i cant do anything! he said he wants to see if it grows any bigger. i dont want it to get any bigger. i have been put on tramadol for the pain and today they upped my dose from 1 a day 8  to 8 tablets a day. they want me to remain on these until god knows when. i really feel like im not being listened to. the problem isn't going to go away with tramadol. its just masking the pain.

when i originally saw the consultant he said that no matter what my results were i would either be sorted out within 3 weeks or 12 weeks. i haven't had any explanation as to why i now have to wait a very long time. he told me that i would be having all sorts of different tests to find out weather its fluid filled or a solid mass....this isn't happening now either and i dont understand why?!

i really feel like no one is listening to me and i dont know what to do or where to go from here. i pay my tax so i can be treated...but now it seems i have to fight to do that.

can anyone give me some advice? im so desperate.

thank you Zoe x

the doctor did say that its likely it will be removed because of where my ovary is now. its also moved my uterus to the left. he said that ive had it for years. i wasn't really surprised as id been trying to get them to listen for years.

Many of us felt very unwell while we had cysts and they still turned out to be benign.  At 5cm, they can easily cause pain, and that pulling you described certainly could hurt.  Blood tests are a fairly normal procedure (I assume the doctor is looking for cancer tumor markers), but these tests are not reliable, either.  False positives (common) and false negatives can occur for women still young enough to bear children.

I hope you get better information soon.  It might be something that will require surgical removal.  It is already large enough to qualify for removal no matter what type of cyst it is.  It may be the best solution to stop the pain.

yes...its taken a few years to get the doctors to listen to me tho. but i finally stamped my feet and got them to listen. im in the early stages at the moment. they don't know what type of cyst i have at the moment. i had my first meeting with the gynecologist on friday. he told me that i have a cyst on my left ovary thats about 5cm but it has pulled my ovary over its self and down to the side of my uterus. im in a lot of pain.

my pain has worsened in the past 6 months. the doctor has taken blood and i should get my results a week today. he is testing to see if its a tumor. but im guessing thats normal procedure as my mum has just gotten over cancer (breast)

in the past few days i havent been able to sit comfortably and today ive started to feel really unwell.

is it bad that i feel so sick?

Yes they can.  Some cause no symptoms while others cause a wide assortment of symptoms.  What problems are you having and have you actually been diagnosed with a cyst problem?
