Doctor dropped me and I need my script filled

My Doctor of 6 years recently dropped me for no reason.  He had put me on Duragesic patches 5 years ago and over the years has upped my prescription to 125mcg/72hrs.  I am having a hard time finding another doctor that will continue my meds.  What do I do now?  My only other option is to go to a clinic and try to get off the meds in the next 2 days before my script runs out.  I had a doctor appointment today, but he said he won't prescribe the duragesic.  what do i do now?

Can you go outside of your town, to a neighboring town? Did the practice not transfer its patients to another facility? I cannot believe they would leave you hanging! That's just not right! Hope you figure something out! Good luck!

I wouldn't go to a Methadone Clinic! My dad did that and they labeled him a drug addict and he cannot get narcotics anywhere but that clinic. And they do not give them for pain, so somewhere he had to lie and say he was an addict... he truly came to bite him in the rump!

I suffer with chronic neck and back pain.  Even drugs only help a little.  My doctor has passed away and I live in a small town with 2 medical doctors not taking new clients.  I will be out of drugs in 3 days.  Does anyone know where I can get my drugs until I find a new doctor.

Hi SSgarges:

I'm sorry this happened to you. I guess maybe you should have gone to the appt. even though you didn't have the x-rays and such in hand. I too had an appt. with the Surgeon not to long ago and I didn't have what they had asked for. I went anyway and they were able to retrieve it through their network over the PC. Most all Clinics now are connected through the net so that all your data is available to them at the tip of their fingers.

Yes, Doctors that prescribe the Fentanyl Patch are very hard to come by and you cannot just stop taking it. The w/d's are extremely wicked. I know, I have been through it. I too have used the Patch until recently. I weened myself off of the Patch so that when I have my 5th back surgery, the pain meds will work. Being on the Fentanyl Patch at 125mcg's as I was, was going to make pain control after surgery almost impossible. My heart goes out to you.

Do you have any Methadone Clinics in your city or town? That may be an option. If you do, tell them what has transpired and they can help you.

Sorry I didn't have better advise.
My best,
Mollyrae

Well, that does not sound like a very good reason to drop you and put you in such a bad situation!  Bad doctor!

He sais he sent e a letter, but I never recieved it.  I went in today and asked for a copy of the letter and it says that it is a result of non-compliance with office policies and procedures.  I don't really know what I did, except that I missed an appointment at the surgeons office that they didn't let me know about.  They scheduled it and never told me about it.  The surgeon called the day before my appointment and told me that I was scheduled.  And I could not get my xrays and cat scans in time to show up for it, and I told her I couldn't.Other that that I don't know.  I did find another doctor and I have an apointment next Tues.  Hopefully everything will go good.  Say some prayers for me!!! :)

Is he not tell you, or are you just not telling us (or yourself) why he dropped you?  It doesn't make any sense.

Can you ask him if he will instead help you come off of the duragesic?  Perhaps prescribe a small number of a lower dose?

Or perhaps your PCP will help you taper off.

The unfortunate thing about finding a new pain care doctor is that they will ask for the records from your old doctor.  Unless you are correct and there is really no reason except his whim, it might be difficult to find another to treat you.

the ER in my city absolutely let you be in FULL withdrawal.  Theyre NO help!

I would contact my PCP--

Good Luck!

A thought... maybe try the ER, they for sure won't let you go into full withdrawals.  Your doctor has a duty to you to take you down off the patches, stopping them like that is dangerous.  Not to scare you but I went through withdrawals and it was so bad I do not remember the entire week! Good luck!

I meant to say that stopping the patch at a high dose without tapering is dangerous.

I don't know why anyone would do this and I'm so very sorry.

I'm so sorry for your situation.  I would be looking for a pain management clinic to help you.  In the mean time, the best thing you can do is look for another PCP to refill your prescription until you find the right pain management doctor.  If you run out and are going through withdrawals, you will have to go to the ER for treatment.  Stopping the patch is extremely dangerous.

There IS a reason - even if he hasn't shared it with you. I would keep asking him why he's dropped you and refusing to prescribe you more meds, as this reason could affect your next doctor. (if he's marked something in your file).
And then I would do as Sandee says - hit the phone books and internet.
Best of luck.

Hello SSgarges,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I am very sorry to hear about your medication issues.

Can you share with us a guess as to why your physician of six years dropped you? What did he say? It is normal that a physician provides you with a reason. Certainly request your medical records. Check the last months of his documentation and search for a hint.

Are other physicians willing to prescribe anything for your pain? If so I would take it. Do they have suggestions as to how you can detox? It just doesn't seem professional that a physician would refuse to help you at least through withdrawal.

I assume you have checked with multiple PM Clinics. If not hit the phone books and goggle even if it means a drive for you.

I wish I had better answers for you. Time is running short and I am concerned that you are in for a heck of a time going through withdrawal. You may have no choice but to go to ER when this happens.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing. I will look forward to your updates.

Take Care,
~Tuck

Sorry to hear that, did you take a recent drug test? didhe give you a reason as to why? Most Dr's will give you a 30 day supply if they chose to discharge you for no reason.

Please explain,
