For about a week now I have been having pain in my left shoulder. First it started off to be sharp pain that would shoot up into my neck/ear, then it would go back to my shoulder and the back of my shoulder towards my back. It no longer is sharp pain but it's ache pain like I just worked my muscle out. I had an episode where my trap muscle by my shoulder felt like it was burning. Then my whole arm felt like it was burning along with the upper part of my back. I have been to the hospital because pain in the left shoulder is a heart attack symptom and they did an EKG on me, enzyme blood test and x Rays. Everything came back fine and showed no sign of cardiac related symptoms. I still get scared though, this pain has been here for about a week. I'm 19 and a female.

As mentioned above, it could very well be a nerve issue. It could also be a torn/partially lorn rotator cuff, which wouldn't show up on an x-ray. I agree that you should follow up with your primary doctor...that's really the only way to find out what the issue is. Good luck!

Hello and Welcome to MedHelp,

I am so sorry to hear about your frightening pain. I am glad that cardiac issues have been ruled out.

Have you followed up with your PCP? If not I suggest that you do so. He/She can begin a work-up to best determine the source of your pain.

You may have an inflamed muscle or ligament. It's possible the pain could be due a thoracic spine problem. An MRI or CT may help with the diagnosis. Again your PCP can help.

A "Burning"  pain is usually indicative of nerve pain. The actual nerve involved could be several. A strained or sprained muscle can swell and cause nerve irritation. And yes you can stain or sprain a muscle with the simplest of movement.

Until you are able to consult your PCP you may try some ice to the area. Don't over work the area. Consider taking an OTC anti-inflammatory. There are several. I'd call your PCP's office and ask which one would be best for you. You may also want to ask you family pharmacist for his/her suggestions.

Don't be frightened. They've ruled out cardiac. Nerve, ligament or muscle pain won't kill you though sometimes it can feel that way.

I wish you well and hope you'll make that appointment with your PCP. Please let us know how you are doing.

Best of Luck and Take Care,
Tuck
