Gasserian Ganglion

I found my referrel to another nerve dr and on it, it says consider gasserian ganglion. I have been looking this up and can't really find anything that will tell me what it is and how it is treated. I know it says surgery, maybe that is why the nerve dr wanted to send me to another one that does surgery. I wish I would of noticed this before on the script or refferel. It says it is masses of stuff that hurts the nerve but it also says it is painless, so I have no clue why that is on there cause my problem is so far from being painless. It also causes weakness and I have that on my right side where the pain is. If anyone knows anythign about this please post. There is no way I can go see this new nerve dr cause he is to far away. So I am back to square one again. I feel so stuck and can't find any dr that will help me and that makes things so much worse! I need to find one asap and I don't think that will happen. I keep telling myself to take a break from trying to get better but I know how painful that will be so there is no way I can. My PCP says the new pain dr is taking over my care and I have to do what he says and we all know how I feel about him so I don't know what to do, I am in tears thinking about how bad this is going to get!
Thanks for listening
Jamie

Thanks Jhuxlet the info has helped. I know when I searched it I couldn't find much at all but I did find some info on Trigeminal ganglion but didn't know if it was the same thing.
Sherry I will call the nerve dr again, he isn't in til Thursday. For some reason I get these drs that only come in a few days a week. I can also call my surgern he gave me a list of names so maybe I can get them again. When I got the lists of these drs I was very upset so just set them aside. that was when my nerve dr told me he could no longer treat me cause I am in need of pain meds. So YES mother sherry I am trying my best here lol I will look some more on the net.

I forgot to include that it is also known as a Trigeminal ganglion so try googling that as well.

Sweetheart, listen to me!! Now this is Momma Sherry talking!! Your sweet Hubby needs to borrow their car once or twice a month so that you can go to the BEST!! THEY OWE YOU!! You know that I'm saying that with a LOT of Love!!!  :)....Sherry

If by chance that won't work then ask your Nerve Dr. for a referral that is closer. I have a feeling tho that this one was the best for your case wasn't he? I just want the VERY best for you my dear. :)  I just thought, could you rent a car for a day? Sometimes they will have some VERY reasonable rates. Just a thought.....Sherry

Hi

I found this interesting as have never heard of this so I did a little research. A ganglion is a non cancerous type of cyst that can form in the body, commonly in the wrist. A gasserian ganglion is one on or near to the trigeminal nerve, a nerve of the face you have one on both sides. If you search google for Trigeminal neuralgia this will give you better information.

I know it's not the most reliable source but wikipedia has an alright article on it, however I would search on other sites as well to confirm the information. Here is a link to the article and another site with a brief definition:

http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1O62-Gasserianganglion.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigeminal_neuralgia

I hope that is helpful!

I have a bad car and so does my husband, I can't ask my father inlaw cause well you know why. How would I get there? I keep thinking this over in my head but there is no way I can go down there once a month for treatment. Out of all the drs in this state there has to be one closer.

With the roads being fixed at it being down town it might take us 1 or 2 hours to get there.
My pain is in my face. what I didn't like about the pain dr is he told me this is all in my head 3 times, told me I am to young to be on pain meds, told me to go to a NET or a dentist or a oral surgern when I have been to ALL of those and been cleared. And his office was very dirty and he was rude. No way in you know what am I letting him put a needle in my face. He didn't even ask me about it he said he is doing a nerve block on the 25th (a day before my husbands birthday) and if that didn't help with the pain then it is atypal face pain and he don't treat that with anything.

Oh, Jamie, I feel so bad.  You sound sooo despondent.  Has your PCP been treating you up until now?  If so, why does she want to turn your care over?  What is it about our pain doctor that you don't like?

I'm thinking of the wording of the gasserian ganglion.  I know nothing about it (though I know a regular ganglion cyst is supposed to be painless.  I know 2 people who had them and neither had pain.)  It may mean that the ganglion itself is painless but that it causes pain in the nerves it's touching.

I'm not sure where you're located, but how far away is the nerve doctor?  Are there any closer?
