What about taking the oxycodone (oxycontin) every 12 hours....it is a long acting extended release medication....and then use an instant release form of oxycodone like percocet every 4-6 hours for breakthrough pain. The 2 medications are frequently used together for pain management. I hope by now that something has been found that is working.
I have to say that bone pain is one of the most difficult to control. If she doesn't have a Pain Management physician working with the surgeon, it's time to ask for a consult. Talk to the nursing station to get that process started. It shouldn't be a big deal.
Another idea is to ask about adding an anti-inflammatory medication instead of more narcotics. They seem to do better for bone pain than narcotics. Worth a try!
I'm sorry to hear of your sister's pain...Unfortunately none of us can say what would work for her....
So she is off the patient controlled analgesia (pain pump)? It sounds like it as they do not release a patient from the hospital until they are tolerating foods, passing gas/using the restroom on their own, and tolerating actual pills for pain.
Also...was she seeing a pain management Dr. or an Orthopedic who prescribed pain medication before the sugery? If so...I would speak with them directly...
Oxycontin is a 12 hour medication on label, but there are Drs. who will prescribe it every 8 hours...
May I ask what milligrams they are prescribing?
