Please explain how pain management is diff from Family Dr's

Okay I have been needing to go to pain management for a long time but maybe I had it mispercieved as a place where drug seekers went and since most Dr's automatically look at you this way I wanted to stay clear of there. I am willing to do whatever I have to have one pain free day 2 would make my year. My ailments are so bad I don't bother leaving my house anymore. I might go to my moms 30 min away. I love to shop once a month but now it is embarassing as most of the time i end up in wheelchair(i have to go down all the aisles) I was doing okay staying home managing everything, cleaning, bills, taking care of my kid and boyfriend and I did good selling on ebay which may I mention is a full time job. My brain is always going even if my body isnt so I am always busy. I can barely take care of my kid or boyfriend, They are taking care of me. I cant do ebay because i would have to be able to get around and work to find good things and shipping, listing, etc. I am in the bed most of the time or on the couch not cause i wanna be but my body wont let me do much and if i do overexert i pay for it the next week. I have so many terrrible symptoms with this Lyme and after finding out my Dr. said take these antibiotics and ill see u in a month. So lets wait longer while this disease totally debilits me. I know I need 2 tests and dr said my insurance wouldn't cover. He gave me sheet with what tests and phone number. I cant even handle the stress of the bills anymore much less know what to do with this paper. Brain fog i guess or disease taking over my brain but I need some help with these things. Okay back to why i worte post. I would like someone to tell me about pain management. Are they gonna look at me like im stupid or call me a liar. Am I going to leave feeling like it was a waste of time and no farther into finding out what is going on or be told you have this see you in a month. Dr's in Pa have no bed side manner and the hospitals shouldnt even be allowed to be open. Imagine 1900's that is how it is. I found this place called Pelicca Pain in Scranton Pa. I just want to be properly medicated instead of having the same amount of medicine i had 3 or 4 years ago that doesnt touch the pain but will have to deal with some of pain because I dont want to be over medicated either. I want someone to be respectul and understand what i am going through. When they finally find out what is going on with my muscles it will be just like the pid situation and the lyme. Too late and its done irreversible damage. I know i get off the subject just feels good to let it all out and this is the only place i feel comfortable doing that. Thank God for Sandee and Tuck and all of the helpful people on Medhelp. Back to pain management is this a place you can go and use insurance or will i have to pay cash? Tomm is the big day to call and for me a phone call is a big deal right now sounds dumb but its the truth. I read that when you go to pain management you have to go to several visits spanning over a month to actually get meds for people that dont already take how do they handle people that are on medication already. Oh and my family Dr said he would write whatever prescription pain management said. This I totally dont get. He is not my prescribing Dr now that is my rheumatologist who would like to drop me form 180 10 mg percocets to 120 10mg percocets. She says i take too many for my liver- so i cant even understand how to make someone else see that this is not working and cutting me back makes no sense why not give me something else without that in it. Okay enough ? for now Thanks Lesnbek

I was also on a rather large dose of percocets and as worried about the amount of tylenol I was consuming everyday. I brought this up to my doctor and he switched me to oxycodone. It's the same medicine (same narcotic) as in percocet, but with none of the tylenol. He told me to remember to take a tylenol should Iever get a headache though!

I also wanted to add that a PM doctor will most likely put you on an extended release medication. The amount of Tylenol in the dosage your having to take is not good for your liver as stated by your doctor.
This will make a huge difference in your pain levels I believe.

Hi Lesnbek,
I am so sorry your going through so much. Living in pain 24/7 is very difficult to say the least.
Pain management doctors differ just like other doctors but the main goal in PM is to have you function and have a quality of life you would not without medical help.
Pain management doctors strictly treat pain and they offer you options that your PCP will not. They understand how pain effects every aspect of your life and they try and get you to a point where you can function as normally as possible.
You will be treated like a chronic pain Pt and not a drug seeker.
The doctors in PM are usually very understanding and do everything they can to help you.
PM doctors also keep up on all the new procedures and medications that are available in PM.
There are some PCP or DO's that treat pain as well. Tuck sees a DO and she is very happy with her doctor. I would suggest making the appointment and go from there.
I think you will be very pleased:)
