Throwing up again

I thought I had this GI thing licked.  I worked all week, didn't miss any time and then today went to the plant store, went out to lunch with a friend of mine.  Around 5pm I started throwing up and getting the stomach pain again.  I truly have no idea why this is continuing but I do have an appointment with the GI doctor again in a week.  Hopefully  nothing else bad is happening.  I've spent ENOUGH time in the hospital this year and do not want a repeat stay. Any suggestions?

Hi Karen,

I was up right with you all last night. :)  Little sleep for me either. You'll often see me here till 3AM or longer....prowling our posts and looking for others in pain.

I cannot recommend a medicine but vicodin never helps my occasional severe headaches. A bottle of vicodin would not ease my throbbing migraine or headache. Strangely two simple ibuprofen will normally reduce my headaches....adding caffeine to it helps also.  When they are severe, it may take three.... And then I go to a dark room with absolutely no noise and an ice pack for my head and do my best to sleep.

Have you ever heard of a narcotic induced headache or fever? They can happen on occasion with some ppl. I have had both.

Yes I too have an emergency container...not a popcorn bowl...but an old wastebasket that I use when I am so sick I cannot get my head off the pillow. Whatever works when you are sick is fine...but am glad to hear you won't be serving us popcorn out of your handy bowl when we come to visit. :)

If you are not feeling better it is TIME to go to ER....with your history you should not dismiss your symptoms. You may be experiencing a nasty virus but I would not take the chance. Please get it checked out and let us know how you are doing. I'll be watching for your next post.

I am so sorry! For both of you! I know EXACTLY how you feel! I often have periods of days when I cannot keep anything down. After My last hospital stay I was prescribed zofran upon discharge. Ever since I have switched from phenegran to zofran. Phenegran never really did anything for me but the zofran really helps! Pelvic pain can be agonizing and for me at least often changes. Sometimes its a cramping pain, sometimes a stabbing, sometimes throbbin, hard to tell how you're gonna feel from day to day. Everymorning comes with its own little surprise! (not usually a good one though). I know you're not supposed to drink really cold drinks when your tummy is upset but I find that I feel better. And if I'm gonna end up at the toilet anyway I'd rather end up there feeling a little better. And you're so right. Popsicles can be a godsend. The last time I went to the ER dehydrated from throwing up for days and days I was running about a 102 fever and before the hubby drug me down to the ER I was in a really hot shower just going through the popsicles and throwing them up. Like I couldn't get my body temp right. I needed the hot water but also was craving the cold from the popsicles. I think he thought I was loosing my mind. I really hope you feel better soon! (If you get excrutiating pain please go get a ct done or something that may show kidney stones). For me, before I pass a stone I get really sick throwing up for days and then a fever like you have and THEN the pain presents and I know it's a stone... Please let us know what your PCP says... Please call him! With your surgery and recent issues, I really think he needs to know even if you feel better, so they can make a note in your chart.

I have also noticed many people on here with abdominal/gastric problems, fever, headaches, etc... Does anyone here think that the egg recall may have something to do with it? Not sure where everyone lives....however, the number of states affected has been expanded. I bet the ER's have been bombarded with people with symptoms similar to these.... They say for every person who has a reported case of the poisioning, there are at least 30 others out there who go unreported.

Just a thought.

Karen,

I'm so sorry that this has happened to you at the ER!!!  Just when you really needed a MORE thorough check up and they do THIS to you!!!  I'm just VERY glad that Reggie was here this week-end and was with you!!! It breaks my heart when you were having to do this WITHOUT anyone there by your side!!  He REALLY does sound like a VERY good guy.  :) Of course, I'm VERY partial to anyone from the Sooner State or the Sunflower State!!! :)

The fact that you are having so MANY abdominal and gastro problems is TERRIBLY disconcerting and worrisome to me.  PLEASE - PLEASE contact you PCP tomorrow or your Surgeon OR call the ER if it gets worse - just as Tuck has said.  You KNOW that she gives the VERY best advice that there is!!!  She may not be a Doctor but it's NICE to have a Nurse around sometimes on here isn't it !! Especially one that can give you the ins and outs about the ER procedures!! :)

As I've told you MANY times I SURE wish that we lived closer so that I could help you out!!!  I would have GLADLY taken you to the ER and I wouldn't have been very quiet when you got the run around either. This is ONE time I wish I STILL lived in Tulsa as I would have been close enough to have gotten to you!!!

I'm sending you VERY gentle ((((HUGS!!)))) and MUCH Love........Mama Sherry

You poor dear!! I just sent you a PM...that's why I am a bit late getting back to the board...sorry. You didn't just have a "very weird experience," you had a very horrible experience. Why some physicians leave their bedside manners in their underwear drawer is beyond me.

I am so sorry that you were treated so poorly in the ER. Your physician must have had his ER shoes on today. It is my guess that he did not think that you had a life threatening issue. Technically that is what ER's are suppose to treat. So he gave you some fluids, an antiemetic, checked your liver functions and sent you home. Had he had his MD shoes on he would have treated your symptoms and looked more closely for reasons. Unfortunately we just don't know what we are going to get when we go to ER.

A few weeks ago my husband also got poor treatment.....at my ER. He had a physician that I didn't know and who just didn't give two hoots. It wasn't until I complained and said he should have this and this and this that the ER physician actually did anything constructive. Luckily I knew both nurses and they agreed with me. My husband should have received better treatment without my intervention, just as you should have. I am so sorry that this happened to you.

Your B/P is slightly elevated with good reason. It will elevated with pain, dehydration, fever and stress. You had all four.  My guess it is has come down a bit but be sure and have it checked tomorrow.

I have never known an oral temp of 101.6 to be considered a low grade fever. That term is generally used in temps ranging from 99.0 to 100.9 orally.

You could have picked up a virus. That time of year is fast approaching.  If it is a virus you should feel much better tomorrow. You should not get worse tonight. If your symptoms get worse during the night be assertive and call the ER...see what they have to say. Certainly if you are not better tomorrow you must see your PCP and you may also want to call your surgeon. Sip fluids and take what ever they prescribed for you. Try to get some rest. These horrid symptoms may be an accumulation of the trauma that your poor body has been through recently. Lets hope it's nothing more.

I know you hate to miss more work but you may just have to do so. Please let us know how you are doing. Has the vomiting stopped?  Has your temp come down. Keep an eye on that too. Your PCP will want to know what it was during the night. Hang tight till tomorrow.  I hope you will be feeling better very soon.

My heart goes out to you!! Please take care!!

I always thought 101 is a fever too.  And I also thought my blood pressure not dropping in four hours that I was there should have told them how I was feeling when I got there and then again when I left.  But as I said the nurse was not concerned at all about my blood pressure when I was leaving.  They did make a comment about it when I came in though about how high it was and what my pain level.  So, I guess that is kind of funny. I also think the doctor did not want to be there, as I said he really wouldn't even examine me and I think that was not the sign of a good doctor when they refuse to even properly examine you.  But, now I know.  I've only seen that doctor one other time and he admitted me into the hospital, so I know he does have a heart, I guess it was just not in his chest today (ha,ha)

I have always thought that 101 is a fever but I could be wrong. I am so sorry about the ER dr I can't beleive how rude he was. I think he just didn't want to be at work today and he took it out on everyone that came into the ER which is not the right thing to do. I know when I go to the ER they take my blood pressure before I leave too, and I have been told that mine is always high when I am in pain. When I was at my PMP the nurse asked me if I have had problems with my blood pressure being high in the past, I told her for some reason I always have high blood pressure when i am at the dr, I have a machine at home I am thinking just checking it from time to time and see what it runs when I am not in pain at the drs office.
Don't let what the dr did to you get you down. You was worried about your heatlh and you had every right to be there just like the girl that broke her arm. I don't know if they send you out papers to ask how your ER visit went or not but if so make sure you put on there how you felt so maybe that dr will get a talking too. Oh and the stress that has been caused to you this week can be another reason why your blood pressure is high.
I hope your able to get some good much needed rest tonight, If you need anything I am always a phone call away.

That is just awful the way they treated you .I too think that your blood pressure is high .I know when i have went in with a migraine they would take my blood pressure before I left .If it was still high they took that as an indicator that I was still in pain and did not let me leave until it came down some .Also where else do they expect you to go on a Sunday if you have a medical issue ? I mean all the Dr's offices are closed .I feel like they blew you off .That is not right .They are there to do their jobs no matter what day it is .I would write a letter to the CEO of that hospital and tell them the way you were treated .They should  be informed of this .Also ,you having a fever is a concern of mine .You just had surgery I would think that a fever is not a good sign .I know what you mean about feeling judged .I had a similar experience last year at the ER .They told me not to come back for my neck pain and I told them I would come back as many times as I needed to .The treatment I got was horrible .I left crying my eyes out because they treated me like a drug seeking freak .This is reprehensible .I am so sorry you were treated this way and you should not have to feel like that .If you continue to feel sick I would go back .Tomorrow you really need to call your Dr and let them know what is going on .

Ok, here is the update from the migraine/stomach issue.  I DID go to the ER today and had a very weird experience. I had my friend, I feel so bad he came over to hang out and visit and ended up having to take me to the ER becuase I could not stand the headache.  I took ibuprofen, tried drinking some caffeine, tried to sleep it off and nothing worked.  It was so bad that I couldn't sit in my living room becuase the sun was coming in and it was hurting my eyes.  So, I got to the ER at 1:30 and they put me back in a room immediately, I had the same nurse that I've had twice, and then nothing.  No doctor, I threw up on the floor and in the sink, I came out and asked for a emesis basin, the nurse came in (this was around 2:15 still no doctor) she came in around 2:25 and said I'm sorry there is only three patients but the doctor got busy and I'm not sure when he is coming in but I'm going to go ahead and give you zofran (THANK GOODNESS) and take some blood.  She also asked for a urine sample (even though I didn't have any pain there.)  So, I'm just laying there, and laying there and had in my mind at 4pm I was going to call the nurse and tell her to unhook the IV.  I was getting very angry.  Finally about 3:45 the dr. came in and said  your urine work is fine (ok, I wasn't thinking I had a bladder infection) and he said my liver tests were normal, but I was a little dehydrated (imagine that) but everything else looked ok.  He then asked, why are you here?  I said I threw up about twenty times last night, and at least five times today and my stomach hurts and I have a very bad headache, which I thought was a migraine.  I asked him, do you get migraines from throwing up?  He said I don't know, but it doesn't look like we need to admit you this time, and I will give you a bad of fluid, some more zofran and some pain medicine.  He didn't look at my ears, even though they were hurting, he did touch my stomach for about two minutes and then backed up in the corner to talk.  When I started asking him about the headache, he didn't bother examining my neck and he walked out.  Seriously, that's how my appointment went today.  I thought it was very unprofessional, is that the way the ER appointment is supposed to go? When he was standing in the corner I said it seems to be busy today, and he made the comment, "Yes everyone wants to come to the ER on a Sunday, I don't know why" after that comment I was afraid to say anything else about how I felt.  My friend came back to the room where I was, the person next to me broke her arm, and the physician said " Well we got your xray's back and your arm is broken, why did you fall" very rudely and Reggie (my friend) and I were talking and saying, wow that was even worse than what he said to me.  It was like he was blaming the person for falling and breaking her arm.  I felt so bad for her.  Anyway, at the end of my ER stay the nurse came in and handed me my paperwork and said, thanks for coming in it looks like you and the doctor have made an agreement (????, what) and I said I have no idea what your talking about, but maybe it means that I'm seeing my doctors this week, I don't know.  The one thing that did upset me and the nurse had to go talk to the doctor.  When I came in my blood pressure was 156/97.  I'm a person that runs 120/60 or 70.  The nurse did my blood pressure at the end of my wonderful ER treatment and my blood pressure was 154/90 and then she took it again and it was just a few points later.  I looked at the monitor and then I told her, obivously I don't feel much better, I guess you can probably tell from my blood pressure, she then said, oh no, a lot of times blood pressure doesn't mean much but we just have to take it and write it down before you leave.  She then said I have to talk to the doctor, she came back and handed me my discharge paperwork that said that I have abdominal pain and that I needed to see the GI doctor or come back if my blood pressure got higher.  One of my questions is, I think this is one of the first times, or probably the first time that my blood pressure has been that high (it was that high in while I was in the hospital and they told me it was because of pain) why did she take my blood pressure twice and then completely blow it off when I asked her.  It's very obvious to me that the doctor could care less how I was feeling today and just wanted me discharged.  Personally I think my blood pressure was a little high considering I NEVER have high blood pressure unless I'm in pain, and that really bothered me the way the doctor and the nurse treated me.  What do you guys think?  Tuck, I would really like some of your expertise, and anyone else that may know about all of this stuff.  I just feel like I better not get sick again, and especially not go to the ER again.  I feel like I was being judged today.  Oh, and I had a fever of 101.6 today too while I was there.  They told me it was not much of a fever, just a "low grade" I didn't know 101 is low grade, I just thought it was a fever.

Count me in on this party, but it's nothing as bad as you ladies!  I have been throwing up occasionally lately.  I'm pretty sure it's the new/old medication.  Just getting used to the oxycodone again.  I have also had narcotic induced headaches with it, Tuck.  I always kind of considered it a "rebound" headache or something.
I have been taking tylenol and drinking caffiene to help the headaches.  The only problem is that caffeine is hard on my stomach.  So when I start the vicious cycle of throwing up and headaches I just take an ice pack to bed and give up.
I haven't thrown up in a couple of days, though, so that's good.  I need to have an emergency container, but I always make a break for a bathroom.  The kids/guest bathroom is right by the living room but I instinctively run for the master bath because I have cushier floor mats.  At one point in the pregnancy I had bruises on my knees from kneeling at the porcelain throne.
I hope you ladies feel better soon!  Karen, please go to the ER if it gets really bad.  It could all be related.  Definetly call the doc tomorrow!  I hope you all get some good rest.

Hi Karen !  I'm sorry you are still feeling bad .Mummy3too says that excedrin migraine works great for migraines .It has been my experience that vicodin makes them worse .I would have my appt moved up because you should be feeling better .I too have a headache today but it's not a migraine .I was up til 5 am this morning .I have gotten my days and nights mixed up .If your migraine is hurting so much don't hesitate to go to the ER .They can give you something to help you .I know what you mean about the bowl .I have a small trash can that I use .There were several times that I couldn't make it to the bathroom so I would keep that can right beside me lined with grocery bags .The things we have to do .lol I hope you get to feeling better Karen .You have been through so much these last few weeks .You know I am here anytime you need me .

Tuck, Melissa, and Alison

No more throwing up, but I woke up with a new symptom today, a horrible migraine, which I never get.  Can anyone tell me why my head is hurting so bad that now I feel that I need the ER department again.  I took my vicodin, but it is not helping at all.  I just don't know why this is happening, my doctor appointment with the specialist is on the 30th but I think I may need to move it up.  If ithis is something that I just have to go through and it just takes time to heal, that's one thing, but shouldn't I be feeling just fine now?  And Melissa and Alison, we were all up pretty late last night, I couldn't sleep either and was just hanging out in my jammies as well, cleaning out this silly bowl I use when I get sick.  I don't know if anyone else does that but I get tired of running to the bathroom and have this big popcorn bowl that's ended up being my emesis basin for times like this.  I don't think I'll ever use it again as a popcorn bowl.  I hope everyone is having a better Sunday and if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Hi Karen,

I am so very sorry that you are having the same symptoms again. How concerning. I hope you will contact your physician eight away Monday with your issues. If it gets worse I don't think you should wait till Monday.

I know it is not all that unusual to have some epigastric symptoms after all you have been through with the gall bladder. But if should not be extreme and it shouldn't last every long. So if it continues you really need to have it checked out...once again.

You just have had too much. It;s long past time that you should be feeling good. My heart goes out to you and I hope that today was just a fluke. You must be so sick and tired of being sick and tired!!

Please let us know how you are doing Sunday. Hang in there,,,,we're here for you.

Feel Better,
~Tuck

OMG!!! Between the 2 of you....and your hospital stays....you guys have had enough!!! You ARE perfect to have your own little support group!!! Being that you guys can relate to each other so well.... I can join the group with minor stomach issues, I have a complete pelvic floor prolapse....does that count? hahaha...I LOVE popsicles---especially when I am not feeling that great... the rectal part of my prolapse can be such a pain...even when I religiously take my lax-a-day....

I'm guessing that everyone is having a busy busy Saturday night?? Hopefully we'll have more traffic on the forum tomorrow:) I know how many of us care about the 2 of you! I remember that thread when you were in the hospital Karen! When Mama Sherry kept texting or calling you or something with all of our messages and well wishes!!! It was like every little while, and she was so good at replying to each of us immediately! Hopefully the 2 of you can stay out of the hospital for a while now???Deal???
Hope the 2 of you can rest tonight:)

Yes Karen I also am having severe belly pain .It is scary to hurt like that and not know the cause of it .I was so scared that I had colon cancer or something because of the pain but my colonoscopy didn't show any sign of it Thank God .It is such a shame you are feeling so bad while your friend is visiting .I know my family has deserted me tonight and I am feeling alone right now .They have been with me all week though so they deserve some time to do something on their own but I do feel lonesome .I have my chihuahua Jackson hanging right by my side so he is a comfort .It seems like we are in the same boat with this .I want to you to know I will be here for you anytime .I understand what you are going through .We can have our own little support group ! LOL! We are in a club few would want to join I think .I also wanted to tell you that popsicles are great when you are sick to your stomach .My son found some made out of fruit juice that are really good .Last time I practically lived on popsicles and now am back on them .Like I said I am here if you need someone to talk to .I hope you get feeling better because this is the pits I know .Take care of yourself sweetie

Thanks Melissa.  Yeah, I decided I was done with food too and went back to applesauce and sprite.  I just don't understand why my belly hurts like it does.  I have a friend who came in from OK and is staying the weekend and I'm bumming around sick while he is out visiting other friends because I'm too sick to go out and visit with him.  I'm so sorry you've had the same issues, I guess you and I are living the same life right now.

Feel better!

Hi Karen ! I can identify totally with what you are going through .I tried to eat some solid food today but my body isn't having it .I threw up shortly after unfortunately .I have some phenergan to take and it has helped and I just went back off solids .I am able to keep jello and chicken broth down so I am going to stick with that .I am glad you are seeing your Dr soon for this .I know how awful it is when your digestive system is messed up . I really don't know what kind of suggestion to give only that for me going off solids was the best .thing .You can last for a long time on broth and jello and such .I know today was the first solid food I had eaten in a week .Mainly ,it's important to keep plenty of fluids in your system .I am really sorry you are still having to deal with this after all you have been through .I hope you feel better soon and that your Dr can figure this out .
Take care
