Hi con339,

Sorry I'm late to your post! I want to welcome you to the MH PM (Pain Management) Forum. I'm glad that you found us and posted. There are no Doctor's on the PM Forum, we are all CP (Chronic Pain) patients that help each other through our own experiences with pain issues.

I'm very sorry that you are having painful issues with your arms.  What Ghilly and Ginger1975 said are both good suggestions as to what might possibly be the cause of what you are experiencing. The only way that you will be able to find out what is causing this, is for you to go to your Dr. and receive a diagnosis.  We can't diagnosis anyone's condition or even suggest a remedy. We try to give you possibilities that might be causing the condition and let people know what has worked for us in the past or is working now.  But, it will take a visit to the Dr. to get a diagnosis or a remedy for you.  Remember what I said at the beginning, there are no Dr.'s on the PM Forum.

If you would like to "Ask a Doctor" here on MH, we do have a Dr.'s Forum and I'll give you the link to that.  Click on this and it will give you all the different Forums that MH has to offer.  If you look to the right you will notice the "Ask a Doctor Forums" and all the different Dr.'s that you can chat with on MH.

Here's the Link:  http://www.medhelp.org/forums/list

Hopefully, you will be able to take care of the pain that you are experiencing at night and get back to normal.   I wish you the best and hope this has been of help to you.

Good luck..........Sherry

It could be other things besides your neck too. I have neck problems now but in the past have had shoulder pain that acts the same way as neck pain numbness and pain in your arms while sleeping. I've had cortisone injections that helped the pain and numbness go away for over a year. Another thing it could be is an ulnar nerve compression or in some bad cases I've been told carpal tunnel. You should really have it checked out. My neck has djd, bone spur and hernia ruins that are causing pain now but honestly I thought it was my shoulders acting up. Good luck and take care of yourself.

I would go see a doctor about this.  This is the way my problems started.  I would lay down in bed at night and my arms were asleep before I was.  Turned out I had three herniated discs in my neck that pressed on nerves when I was laying down but I never knew it until my fingers on my right hand went numb one night and stayed that way, along with excruciating pain.  I ended up having surgery to remove the discs, put in cadaveric bone grafts and internally cast the whole deal with a 4 inch long titanium plate held in place with 4 titanium screws.

Everything was fine for about 10 years and now it has started happening again.  My neurologist sent me for another MRI and it turns out the 2 discs below the plate have now ruptured, but I just can't go through another surgery of that magnitude right now, so I'll live with it.  I developed adhesive arachnoiditis following the pre-surgical myelogram before the first surgery so I am now on pain medication for the remainder of my life, so that handles any pain from the situation pretty well.  But I'd get it checked out if I were you.  It might be something you could have corrected surgically.  Just say "no" if they want you to have a myelogram before the surgery, though.
