Tuckamore is absolutely correct. I had surgery four months ago and was wondering the same thing. If you are having surgery and you are already on pain meds the best thing to do is to wean down as far as you can before the surgery so you will have pain relief afterwards. I found out the hard way when I had surgery eight years ago. I was not told to go down or off my meds and then after surgery I was literally horrified at the amount of pain I was in. I took my normal pain meds and it didn't do anything to relieve the surgical pain. This last time I took it upon myself to get as low as I could go. I was so scared because of my past experience and had my PM doc talk to the surgeon ahead of time to make sure they knew I needed more pain meds than the average person due to tolerance. It worked out great. The surgeon prescribed the pain meds after surgery for about two weeks and then the PM took over again. The best thing to do is to ask the PM to speak to the surgeon so they can coordinate your care.
Hi Janie,
Hello fellow Wisconsinite, Welcome to the Pain Management Forum.
Your physicians should coordinate their prescriptions. Make both aware of the other and it should not be a problem. It is my guess the surgeon will prescribe any addition pain meds that may be required for surgical purposes for a short time. Following that he should refer you back to your PMP. This is just a guess and is up to the two physicians.
I hope your surgery will be a success and you will soon be recovered and feeling better. Please let us know how you are doing.
Take Care,
Tuck
