Oh my gosh, I know you weren't trying to argue.  I only post about the water because I was so surprised when the Hospital told me that.  I had always thought water would be the best thing!  And yes, when all else fails, water is where you turn for sure.  I just meant it's not the first choice.  Lol, you and I are funny...always worried about offending each other even though we never actually do!

Oh, goodness Adgal.  Of course you didn't post that to start an argument nor did I post to have one either!!  I was just saying that about water because I've had issues with my son and dehydration.  My older son has actually been hospitalized for IV fluids due to severe dehydration.  (He's my kid that when he gets sick is 10 times sicker than anyone else).  And our doctor takes the  philosophy that desperate times call for desperate measures.  My kids will NOT drink pedialyte or eat the popscicles.  Even the supposed 'no flavor' one is an issue.  So my doctor always says ---  get any liquid you can in them, no matter what.  She's suggested all kinds of things.  Leave 7 up on the counter to get the bubbles to die down even.  Whatever you can do to get the liquid in.  I've had to get creative because when my kids are in that state, they don't want ANYTHING---  and I have to work on it.  Like I said, we fill three sippy cups with different things ---  usually gator aide, lemonade and water and rotate them.  that is all I was commenting on.

And I am sure milk is fine but I just can't deal with it when it comes back up.  PE YEW!  Oh my gosh, my son vomited a cheese quesadilla last week and I am having trouble with cheese now.  Those dairy products are quite memorable when they are vomited back up.  So, if my kid is vomiting, I tend to avoid it for that reason.  Plus, sometimes they don't want what they throw up for a bit afterwards and I want them to go back to their milk as soon as possible.

Okay, whew.  Lots of liquid and vomit talk here. LOL  But I wasn't trying to say you were wrong or anything.  It's just been my exerience that you do what you can to get 'something' into your kids.  :>))))))

Perhaps I should explain my comments and where my information came from.  When my son had rotavirus we did multiple trips to the Childrens Hospital.  The pediatricians there are the ones that told me that water was not the best choice.  It's because when kids are vomiting or have diarea, they are losing all the salts and sugars their bodies need to stay hydrated.  Water on it's own will not replenish that. Pedialight, broth, even milk.  They told me that even mixing 1/2 juice 1/2 water, or even ginger ale, 7 UP, etc. (completely flat, no bubbles) mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with water are far better choices.  They also told me they know now it's no longer true that you can't give milk. If they will tolerate it, it's fine. But the key is to replenish the salts in order to remain hydrated. Again, this was info given to me by Pediatricians at a Childrens Hospital.  I was surprised too, as my first thought was water.  I certainly didn't post my comments in an attempt to start an argument, just to pass on what I was told is extremely important for a sick childs well being.

Oh, and yes.  It probably is better to have a drink that enhances electrolytes but my kids were difficult so we've used whateve they'll take.  We actually usually have multiple drink choices and rotate them.  good l uck

We do give our children water as they do not drink pedialyte.  Hate it.  We'll give them gator aide too.  And sometimes I squeeze a bit of lemon into the water when I give it to them and mix a bit of sugar.  The key-----  which my doctor told us and seems to work-----  is to give small sips every 15 to 20 minutes.  Just one or two sips.  If a child gulps the drink, an irritated stomach will bring it back up.

However, if I understand you correctly, your child is coughing until they gag and empty their stomach.  My kids do this and actually, so do I.  We have a bad gag reflex.  This is when I do use cough supressent, especially at night.  I'm not a fan of this and always give an expectorant along with it.  But that hard, deep coughing until you vomit is terrible.  And if they don't cough for a little bit, then their throat is less irritated and they might cough less overall.  I use Delsum which is over the counter.  And then mucinex for the expectorant.  That is just what I do.  We don't use much cough medicine around here but the puking during coughing spells is so uncomfortable for all that it is worth it.

My doctor becomes less concerned with what the liquid is as long as they are getting liquid.  The only thing I NEVER give is milk.  Yuck-----  that coming back out is the worst!

Try some popsicles.  Try jello.  All of these are liquids once they get past the mouth.  Also, make some chicken noodle soup heavy on the broth and put gold fish in it.  Have him go 'fishing' for the gold fish and he'll get broth too when he eats it.  My sister swears by giving them salted popcorn or pretzels which will make them want to drink.

Anyway, good luck

As Far as I know and I have researched  a 2 year old can drink water when sick aswell as pedialyte as long as the child is drinking liquids .so I stand by my water comment. It certainly wont hurt to give him whatever liquid he will take ...good luck

It sounds like he has a virus.  I agree with all the things above except for one thing.  Water is not the best thing to give a child that is vomiting.  I thought it was good too, until my son had a lengthy virus, and they told me it would not properly rehydrate as it has no sugar or salts in it.

Also, a fever and vomiting lasting 3 days really should be seen.  Especially if he is only vomiting bile now, which is what it sounds like.  Take him in.

All the best to you.

Hes got nothing in his tummy, he has to take liquids so he doesn't dehydrate, so water, pedialyte, they do pedalyte popsickles , even regular ones are good  check hes passing urine okay and what color it is the darker the more dehydrated he will be. It may be to speak to a doctor to make sure of what is going on, at least the fever is down ..
