hydrocele

My baby boy has hydrocele. We have been advised to put him trough surgery. One of testicales looks a bit bigger. Apparently the channel is not closed. He is 16 months old. I would like to know is it possible something else to be done in order to avoid the surgery? Is it ok if we wait for a bit longer, is it possible the channel to get closed by it self at this age?

I think they prefer to do the surgery later unless it is urgent,  here is a link may give you more information    medinfo.ufl.edu:8050/other/.../pediatric_hernias_and_hydroceles.pdf

I had thought that this most often clears up on its own?  How old is your baby??
