throbbing artery in palm of hand

Hello, recently the artery in the base of my thumb is throbbing off and on throughout the day.  You can see the pulse bulging in and out and then it stops.  My hand also falls asleep during the night.  Is this something that needs to be checked out or will it go away in a few days?

Do you use any machinery a lot or the PC where the thumb would be used...numbing at night may be from several things ,but carpel tunnel comes to mind check out this link www.mycarpeltunnel.com/content/numbness-in-hand-at-night.shtml
