PCOS

I am 28 year old married woman. I am overweight by 20 kgs and have a thyroid problem (hypothyroid). I have been trying to lose weight since a year now. 2years back i was 20 kgs lighter and fit...but i had to really struggle to maintain my weight.
6 months back my period got delayed by 20 days and after a USG of my ovaries the following was reported.

Normal size, shape and echotexture of the anteverted uterus.

Midline echo was seen, normal appearances of the endometrium the thickness of which measures 2.6 mm in a-p diameter.(Within normal limits)

Both ovaries have multiple small peripheral follicles which may be suggestive of polycystic ovaries.

The right ovary measures 3.2 x 2 x 2.2 cm.

The left ovary measures 2.6 x 1.8 x 2.3 cm.

No ovarian cysts or masses were identified.

Normal adnexae and no free fluid was identified.

Conclusion:possible polycystic ovaries

Since then i have been getting my periods with a delay of a week couple of times.....

I am looking at starting a family in the next few months but due to my weight and thyroid as well as the possible PCOS i am worried.

Can someone advice as to whether I have PCOS and what are the medications for the same. Will I be able to get pregnant?

Hi,

just wanted to share this with you...last time i got my period finally after a 20 days delay....but the good news is that this month, i got it just 5 days late...a v definite improvement.
though the cramps are worse, im relieved that i dint have to get as paranoid this month...
i have been doing some yoga breathing exercises and have been having some food which supposedly helps one to regularise the periods(i can share these if u wish to know)... well whatever the reason, i am happy this time :).... i just hope that things improve from here...

how are things at ur end?? has the new medication helped??...do keep me posted....
wishing u all the luck and thanks a ton for ur response :)

I am really feeling for you having all those symtoms can really mess with you head.  It may be worth while getting you doc to put you on some meds that actually make your period come on.  I think Metforim is one that does that.
Sorry about all the short forms.  i have only recently learnt what they are.  It turned out that I wa acutally pregnant but I mis carried at around 5-6 weeks.  Have since seen a gyno and she has started me on clomid to make sure I ovulate.  Only been on it for a month but I am having the same symptom as before so am thinking I might just be pregnant again even though any home test I have done has come back neg.  Currently sitting on day 33 of my cycle and still no period.

As for your weight loss I am sorry to tell you that you will find it very hard to lose weight as both the thyroid and PCOS will both make you put on weight.  There is not much you can do but try your best to be healthy, do as you are eat healthy and exercise regularly and hopdfully you will become healthy from the inside out.
I wish you all the best and keep me posted.

All the best to you Elle82, I am sorry I am not well versed with the short forms, could you ellaborate?

Well my condition has never been so bad.
I had been trying to eat healthy and exercise since a month, havent lost a gram!
to make matters worse, my periods are delayed by 19 days now and i cant think about anything other than my periods...im all bloated up...my feet hurt....my tummy feels so bulgy and full all tje time....my face has swollen up too...my rings are so tight....
I know I am not pregnant so pregnancy is ruled out.
I am so worried and my emotions are all high....feel so low i can bury myself in my house for days.....
why cant i just get my periods on time and get healthy even with all my efforts??!!!
ive lost hope with all the docs...they just get the tests done and prescribe something which may or may not work. they are really not bothered to listen to what the patient is going through!!
im sorry if i sound so negative...but i cant think better now.....

wishing you the best!!!

My thyroid levels to were all fine on paper and doc said everything was ok, but I to had all the symptoms of hypothyroidism so I made him put me on the meds, within 2 weeks all my symptoms had gone.
As for the PCOS yes it could be a reason for being overwieght as I have that issue to as does one of my friends.  It is really hard to lose it, it seems as though we only need to sniff food and gain weight.
I also lose alot of hair and had a bald patch at one stage, but some injections soon sorted that out.
I have found that everyone's bodies are different and not matter what the so called normal ranges are some just aren't right for everyone.  I am still not on any meds for PCOS but hopefully when I go and see the gyno she will put me on some to help.
I wish you all the best and don't lose hope on having babies, as I have had two healthy girls and so has my friend that also has PCOS.  Goodluck. And I am here if you have anymore questions.

Hi.....and thanks for sharing your knowledge and advice......its lovely to know that you already are a mother of 2 :)...
in my case, my tsh is within limits yet my doc asked me to start the treatment strangely. She said my symptoms were that of Hypothyroidism. But ive seen no improvement since a year now.
With regards to PCOS, she said she is not sure and my irregular periods could also be a result of me being overweight.
Right now I am confused as I have not been prescribed any medication for PCOS.
My LH/ FSH ratio too is normal.
So, i dont know whats causing this weight gain and all the symptoms. On paper, my thyroid too is working normally! Ive been losing hair like crazy since 2 years actually!!
I am working hard on losing weight now. Hope to see some result. But its v v tough in my case to lose weight. I have to starve and slog all day to lose a few grams in a week!!!.

You sound alot like me.  I to am a 28 year old married woman, with thyroid problems, ( had 3/4 of my thyroid removed when I was 15), and also have PCOS (diagnosed when I was 18), and also overweight. They diagnose PCOS by a internal which I presume you have had, with me they counted more then 20 follicles on each ovay no larger then 7mm.  Having many of these follicles is what they determine as having PCOS.  But on the plus side I have two beautiful girls aged 6 & 4 and my husband and I are trying for a third but having a bit of difficulty.  I have a app with a gyno on the 11th of April.  From what I have been told if you have PCOS there are two meds you can be put on.  Metformin to help regulate your cycles and clomid to help with ovulation.  Other then healthy eating ad plenty of exercise I am sorry but there is not much more you can do with having both of these conditions. I wish you all the best in TTC.
