1/3 of listeria infections occur in pregnant women
infections take a month to start showing symptoms - which make the source of infection hard to trace
but leading causes are unpasteurized queso fresco (not that lilkely to encounter) and DELI TURKEY, then deli ham
it really can come from almost anywhere including unwashed fruits and veggies alfalfa sprouts very commonly carry a great number of food born bacteria
listeria infections cause miscarriage, pre-term labor, still borns and death
I never heat it up when I eat it... my daughter and I survived my 1st pregnancy 4 years ago and that wasnt something anybody heard of yet so I didn't do anything different this pregnancy except deal with GD-- ugh!!
Listeria wasnt first recognized until the 20s and it can be in any jind of contaminated soil or meat hence the FDA requires any place with meats shut down every 24hrs of production for sanitation and they recommend u wash all fruits n veggies. Its not just a dark moist place thing it does well between 39 degrees Fahrenheit and about 99 degrees. They caution pregnant women against eating things cuz hello pregnant women have a weakened immune system and listeria (there are 10 species of it) can pass to rhe placenta thus affecting baby which im pretty sure no mom wants. A good sanitizer is alcohol based cleaners. U cant see it so just avoid situations where u can get it I get subway sandwichs alot but I get them extra toasted and leftovers I microwave to steaming. And women saying I ate a cold sandwich and baby is fine, how do u really know that except for u feel kicks here n there u can be asymptomatic with listeria. Not trying to be rude just stating facts do ur research ive read up on it cuz I was a worrywart with my first and ive worked in 2 different industrial food processing plants.
I've had many sandwiches this pregnancy and the last one I didn't know that it's was even "bad" until this app! But that hasn't stopped me I love them and I'm fine! But to each there own!
I've eaten cold deli meat a few times since I've been pregnant and no problems here. Just don't over do it like eat it everyday
The smell of lunch meat actually makes me want to vomit, so i'm not eating it.
I'm not saying lunch meat is in anyway linked to death in childbirth, but saying that it was allowed in the 1920s isn't a valid argument for saying it poses no risk. Since we have 100 years worth of medical progress since then. Things like anti-biotics and vaccines, ultra sounds
There are studies that so a strong link between listeria and complication and birth defects, which is why the recommendation was made. Pregnant women are more likely to contract it because the stress of pregnancy weakens out immune systems.
I had posted if the sandwich is fresh and from a clean place it is probably fine to eat, but just don't get the pre made sandwich from shelf or vending machine, since who knows how long it has been there.
Our immune systems are not getting weaker because of pregnancy food restrictions, it is actually the over use of disinfectants and anti-bacterial soaps. Food poisoning doesn't strengthen the immune system - i had hemergatic Ecoli when i was 16, hospitalized for 3 days because i was throwing up water and pooping blood. Ever since then i have an extremely sensitive digestive system, very common post serious food poisoning, stress, hormonal changes cause problems for me - i would not wish this on anyone.
You do not want food poising while pregnant, it does pose a real risk!
