benefits of a doula?

So today I was informed that my parent's housekeeper is a doula. She offered her services to me for free and I know that any support helps so I said yes. Have any moms had a doula? How was the birthing process?

I haven't had my baby yet but I'm having a doula present for my birth at home with my midwife. The best thing I love about my doula is she's there to take the heat from my husband if he needs a break, to fetch me things I need and also to be like a bouncer if I HAVE to go to the hospital. She said some hospitals won't allow your mother in the room and that's a big thing for me I'll need my mom and she said that's where she would come in and make sure she would be in the room. She's there to give you and your partner support and to also help your partner to he more involved in the birth if he would like to be.
