Birth story: baby boy at 34 weeks.

I did not wake up this morning thinking id have my son today. Baby boy is almost 34 weeks, technically 33 weeks & 6 days. My fiancé kissed me goodbye this morning and suddenly I felt a huge gush of water like I had stood up too quickly while on a heavy period. But I was still laying down. It felt so different from my first child's water breaking. I rushed to the bathroom and my water broke fully. I called my fiancé and told him my water broke. We live close to the hospital, had to wait for a room at L&D. Once I was there, they confirmed my water broke, checked baby, did an exam, gave me an IV & gave me a steroid shot for baby's lungs plus antibiotics to fight infection. I was admitted and taken to a delivery room. I was 3cm dilated. Once the contractions got really bad I got an epidural. I didn't feel anymore contractions. Only pressure. This was about noon. Up until 7pm I was still 3cm dilated. My doctor came in at 8:30pm and said I would probably be good for a few more days. By then I felt tons of pressure and refused another epidural dose incase it made me unable to feel the pressure. I knew I was close but the doctor was certain I'd be still 3cm. He checked and he was shocked that I was fully dilated and he could feel baby's head. Within 20 minutes I was in the stirrups, the nicu premie team was in the room, my doctor was prepped and ready and my legs were held back. 3 contractions came, I pushed 3 times each contraction and he was here. They let me hold him but only for a moment before they took him to get checked. He was born at 8:59pm on 11-14-13. He came smoothly, no rips or tears and no stitches required thankfully. Everyone expected him to be 4 pounds max at that gestational age 33 wks but he was 5 pounds 6.4oz!!! And he was screaming his lungs off. He looked great. I'm finally back in my hospital room where I'll be til my discharge and baby is getting tended to in the NICU. Tomorrow I'll be able to see him and hold him. I'm praying he does well and exceeds expectations so that he can come home ASAP. Leaving without him will be tough but he made his entrance when he wanted to. I can't wait until I have my baby boy home with us.

I had that same experience with my first son I had him at 35 weeks. I didn't get to hold him because they had to rush to his care because he had fluid in his lungs,it scared me because I didn't hear him cry! He was 5lbs and he had to stay in nicu for two weeks because he wasn't eating on his own! Today he is 3yrs old will be 4 in January and he is so healthy! Also I wonna congratulate u on ur baby boy!!

Thanks! Yeah with my first daughter I got the epidural too late. I asked for it too late and my daughter came too quickly so I had to feel the epidural but it didn't kick in until after she came out so I had to feel the entire birth. But with this baby boy, my water broke and the contractions got stronger faster and because I requested the epidural early, I had it in quickly. The epidural itself doesn't hurt too badly. It's a strong stinging and pinching in your back but trust me it's way less painful than the actually contractions. Once you have it in place, you can press a button to pump the medicine as you need it for pain control. Your lower half goes completely numb and you can't get out of bed until you've delivered. Downside is you get a catheter for your urine since you can't get out of bed but you don't feel that at all because you're numb. You can still feel the pressure when it's time to push so you're not completely senseless just painless. I was sooooo happy I got it. With my first, it was such a painful, horrible experience. Worth it no doubt but painful. Bad contraction the whole time, epidural too late and stitches when she came out at almost 9 pounds. With this one he came smoothly, my pain was under control from the start and I didn't tear or rip or need any stitches at all. Good luck mama!!!

Thanks ladies!

Carter Russell Kamakoa Lampley.

He's got a mind of his own haha. He's one mixed baby with lots of hair. He's Hawaiian, Puerto Rican, Portuguese, Chinese, Irish, German, Mexican, Caucasian. Such a mix. Haven't got to go to the nicu yet because I'm still numb from the epidural but hopefully first thing in the morning!
