When should I tour the maternity ward?

I know its early right now to be asking this but I figured I would go ahead and ask. When should I take tours of maternity wards so I can figure out where I want to give birth? I know there is some specific things I want and was wondering when I should go.

Thanks for the advice. I have three different hospitals to chosse from so I figured it was a good idea to tour them all and see if I liked them. One I dont really like b/c its a litle farther away and its not as personal as some others. The other two seem really nice so I am going to have to go and see about takeing a tour. I guess I will see what happens. Thanks ladies!

I agree with the above poster.  It's never too early.  I think the earlier the better, becuase there are so many things to consider, you need time to make your decision and to make sure your doctor has priveledges at the hospital you choose.  Otherwise you may have to revise your decision or find a new doc.  Like the AP said, some hospitals have specific dates and times, others are just a call and come by kind of thing.

As for me, I don't have a whole lot of choice unless I want to drive 30 + minutes to a diff hospital and get a diff doc.  We have one hospital here.  Doesn't really have what I would LIKE but it'll do.   One drawback to a small town.

I would call and find out if your maternity ward(s) have tour dates and times.  It is never too early to decide.  Some hospitals let you give birth in the tub and others don't.  Also check on their policy with forced IV's.  Many will pressure you, but some will respect your opinion not to have one.  After 4 kids, we've done it many different ways.  :)  The birthing mirrior is the best and make sure they have a birthing ball or bring one.  I gave birth to all of my kids just after spending some serious time on the ball.  Pretty nice distraction, stress relief and pain relief too.
