:-( Sorry to hear you are in that situation... While I don't have genital herpes, I take that same medicine for cold sores on my mouth because without it, I average 1-2 outbreaks per month too. In this last month of pregnancy with stress getting higher, the meds weren't working and I got 3 outbreaks back to back! I talked with my dr and we decided it was best to double my medicine until delivery. With 5 days to go, it seems to be working for me. Would your doctor consider the same?
Also, I'm not sure how far along you are, but consider finding a new doctor. You are correct, no eye ointment will protect your baby if you have an outbreak during delivery. You need a c section at that point.
Take a breath. It's going to be ok. I'm not in this situation, but a baby that is very dear to me was born to a mom with herpes. From witnessing that birth and the aftermath, my advice is to listen to your doctor and take your medications. If you're uncomfortable with vaginal birth, then demand a c section. Just remember to follow the protocols for after birth too. Doctors know that herpes is no joke when it comes to baby, trust them. It never hurts to get a 2nd opinion or ask for a specialist referral.
I want to add: Tbh, if it was me- I'd demand a c section. But thats just because my view is tainted by what I've seen.
I've asked if i can just get a c section and they said that only if an outbreak is present. Which frustrates me so much. How can they tell me what i can and can't have when I'm concerned about the well being of my baby. I'm 33 weeks
Maybe you can switch doctors. Iwould rather a C-Section wouldnt wanna risk anything
I would personally prefer a c-section than risk putting my baby in harms way. If you are not comfortable with your doctor, you might be able to switch. But I wouldn't wait for too long. If you get much further along, another doctor may not take you this late in your pregnancy. Good luck!
I'm currently 14 weeks and understand how u feel. I've had genital herpes for 3 years now and this is my first baby. It scares me that my baby can get it just by giving a natural birth but at the same time I'm hoping by the time I get to ur point my doctor will let me choose. I had an appointment with her today to talk about the fact of having herpies so that helped me out. But I have noticed more outbreaks. And more outbreaks makes life a whole lot harder to always constantly be uncomfortable and or hurting.
I'm currently 30 weeks and also have hsv-2, I acquired it from a cheating boyfriend almost two years ago and i'm also pregnant with my first child. I hadn't had an outbreak in about a year but recently broke out it was so odd and random that I didn't even consider that was what it was. But I've also discussed it with my doctor after tons of research what I found out is that unless you contract the disease while pregnant the chances of you passing it to your baby is like 30%, also they put the drops in your baby's eyes regardless of a break out just because you do have an infection. But how my doctor explained the process was basically that when I get to 32 weeks( which has changed since i'm having a breakout) they'd start me on acyclovir just to make sure that I don't have a breakout within the 37-40 week period but even with me actively taking the medicine which should keep me from having a break out at all they'll still check me for lesions and make sure that i don't have any, in or around my birth canal since one usually triggers another. But up until a few weeks ago I hadn't really talked to her about it although my research reassured me that I'd be able to give birth vaginally without harming my baby I was curious how they would make sure but if I were you I'd call the hospital and ask their policies but mostly if it worries you Starr taking your meds on an everyday basis that way you don't have to worry about whether previous lesions have healed or if your having an active breakout. My on started me on mine today and although my insurance doesn't cover them for some reason I let her know that I will continue to take them up until delivery so that I won't have any issues around that time because I don't want to put my baby at risk
And also most doctors will have the same opinion on delivery although herpes used to be a reason for automatic c-section, they no longer see it as an issue as long as you haven't had a breakout in the weeks leading up to your delivery. But your ob should have put you on your meds on a daily basis by now to prevent anymore breakouts from this point on but If your really worried and when that day comes you believe your putting your baby at risk just tell the doctor your having an internal breakout it's not like they can see it but they know that you know what it feels like and will take your word for it
I've been on a daily regiment since i found out that i have herpes and even then i still got them twice a month. Before and after my period. Im still taking them but they never really seemed to work for me like it does for everyone else. I just came from the doctor which was a different doctor from the one I've been seeing and she said that she's going to up my dosage and if that doesn't work then they'll give me a c section. Thanks ladies for all the advice and support and for understanding
