Whooping cough is pertussis.  It's not a disease pregnant women get its carried by adults with no effect to them but the baby can catch it from the adults and it can be deadly. It's a very scary situation.

Bigmama121 I've never heard of it weakening your baby's immune system. They do give the baby the vaccine after he or she is born but not until about 6 months I think (not 100% sure) but it is best for anyone coming in contact with baby to have it just as an extra precaution.

Hubby and I both got ours and getting flu shot soon. Knufrio is absolutely correct. And it whooping cough on the rise and the fact that it can be potentially fatal a little arm soreness is worth it. It is recommended that anyone who will be around baby get the shot.

MommyofMandaA only the intranasal flu vaccine is live. The injectable flu vaccine is a dead virus.

I got my shot and I was fine afterwards. Also, just want to say what knufrio said is true. This is from a dead bacteria so you cannot get it. The flu shot however is live bacteria and that is why it is very possible for people to get the flu from the flu shot.

My doctor is refusing to give it to me because apparently it can cause the baby to have a weak immunsystem

I got mine done. My arm was sore for a couple days but other than that no effects. It doesn't give you whooping cough but it helps your baby begin to build an immunity to it. My 2 year old had his and he was fine afterwards too. My whole family got them unless they've had a tetanus shot in the last 5 years.

I got mine as well! You'll be able to pass on the antibodies to your lo especially if you breastfeed. :) My cousin's wife never got the shot. He was 3 months old when she caught whooping cough and gave it to her son (granted, she's not that bright). He was in pediatric icu for 3 weeks. He's ok now, but he was touch and go for the longest.

It can't give you whooping cough. Its made with only part of a dead bacteria so there is no way for you to actually develop pertussis from the vaccine. There is also no way to shed the disease either which is another rumor people like to spread.
