The Bumbo Baby Sitter is an award winning baby seat that allows a baby to sit upright unassisted with no straps or fastners. The Bumbo Baby Sitter is a revolutionary new concept with a world wide patent providing a snug and cozy environment for your baby.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Bumbo International, has announced a voluntary recall of the Bumbo Baby Sitter seats.

If the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface, young children can arch their backs, flip out of the Bumbo seat, and fall onto the floor, posing a risk of serious head injuries.

The CPSC has received 28 reports of young children falling out of the Bumbo Baby Sitter seat, including three skull fractures, which occurred when children fell out of chairs that had been placed on tables.

The bottom of the children’s seat is round and flat with a diameter of about 15 inches. It is constructed of a single piece of molded foam and comes in yellow, blue, purple, pink, aqua, and lime green. The seat has leg holes and seat back that wraps completely around the child. On the front of the seat in raised lettering is the word “Bumbo” with the image of an elephant on top. The bottom of the seat has the following words: “Manufactured by Bumbo South Africa

Material: “Polyurethane World Patent No. PCT: ZA/1999/00030.” The back of the seat contains the following “WARNING” - “Never use on a raised surface. Never use as a car seat or bath seat. Designed for floor level use only. Never leave your baby unattended as the seat is not designed to be totally restrictive and may not prevent release of your baby in the event of vigorous movement.”

The Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats have been sold by Target, Wal-Mart, Sears, Kmart, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, USA Babies and various other toy and children’s stores nationwide, and various online sellers, from August 2003 through October 2007 for about $40.

Manufactured in: South Africa

Remedy: Consumers should never use the infant seat on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface. Consumers can contact Bumbo to obtain new warning label stickers and instructions, free of charge. The new warning label will state: “WARNING - Prevent Falls; Never use on any elevated surface.” Consumers should use the Bumbo seat at ground level, but should never leave a child unattended.

Consumer Contact: Contact Bumbo International at (877) 932-8626 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firm’s Web site at http://www.bumbosafety.com/.

I love my bombo seat and so did my son. I never put him in it anywhere except on the floor and when he got strong enough to start twisting out of it we stopped using it. I heard about this recall as well but I think the majority of the responsibility had to be on the way is was used and not so much that it was a defective design.

Some parents have such a lack of common sense. That to me is hideous and not funny, not that im mad at anyone who is laughing lol...<---HA! see I have a sense of humor too :) But seriously who in there right mind would put an infant in an unfastened object on an elevated surface? Even the most secure and most trusted objects should never be placed on an elevated surface while in use......Sorry I know you all here are extremely smart...im just venting because I can't believe some people can be so stupid.<---Sin (I will repent later) :)

yeah i think the parents should be re-called with this one.  to leave your child in a seat on top of a high sruface unattended is totally irresponsibile.  the bumbo com should not be blamed for a parents stupidity.

I don't think so. They are still great product, people just need to learn to read the warnings and WATCH their kids.

Noah loved his bumbo but he did learn pretty quickly that he can arch his back and get out so that is why I always watched him when he was in it, like I normally would with a 5 month old.

Thanks for posting this, some moms might not realize how easy it is for babies to get out of the seat.

I agree. There had to be some responsibility on the part of the parents..

I think the Bumbo Seats are fantastic! Common sense would say they are to be used on the floor while you are supervising... I am still planning on purchasing one.

I DO appreciate the recall information though! MANY times products are just dangerous! So thank you pink for the heads up!
