Spontaneous triplets without ovulation meds....extremely rare. Did you have a positive urine or blood pregnancy test. A doctor would not call them maturing eggs IF they have been fertilized and implanted in the uterus. And at 5 weeks the embryos would not be seen because too early. A mature egg is released from the ovary from a cyst-like structure called the Graffian follicle.

Are you taking Clomid? That can cause ovulation of multiple eggs in one menstrual cycle increasing your chances for a multiple gestation.

You say eggs. Eggs (ova) are not fertilized in the ovary. Doc is probably talking about follicles. An ovum matures in a follicle and typically one is released from the ovary per month. The follicles can be seen with high resolution ultrasound. If 2 are released and fertilized, twins. Releasing 3 eggs in one menstrual cycle is extremely rare. I highly doubt he saw 3 embryos within your uterus. He is probably referring to the eggs for each of your next 3 months. A mature follicle has characteristic appearance on ultrasound when compared to a simple cyst.
