Midwives promote a more natural labour and are informed solely about birth whereas doctors are trained more to deal with medical complications...so if you have a low risk pregnancy I would say definately go for a midwife

I live in New Zealand where you only choice is a midwife unless you have a high risk pregnancy and have been referred to an ob/gyn doctor. I think they are the best, you form such a special connection with them and are so supportive. My appointments usually last around 30 mins and we have a good old chat about everything baby, pregnancy related and other things too. This is my second pregnancy and my 2nd midwife and I think it's the best. She provides such good care too :) she's organized all my scans, blood tests, given me scripts for my low iron and listens to baby and measures me every visit. Answers all my concerns, gives me loads of info and we are working on my birth plan at the moment. I'm 34 weeks and been seeing her since 6 weeks pregnant

I currently have both a midwife and a doctor (I'm a moderate risk pregnancy who hates hospitals lol) and I have to say I very much can say a midwife is my personal choice. The common benefits for midwifery are often a more personal experience and informed choice, meaning that they will explain any tests, steps, concerns and take into consideration all wants and needs you have for your pregnancy. A doctor does not usually explain unless they have to, there just isn't a lot of time. Much of the time I personally was getting tests done without my full knowledge or having a professional make a choice for me that I may not have wanted.
However, midwives are specialized in normal birthing experiences only, as they are not doctors who can prescribe medicine for you. They do consult with other professionals throughout your care and view the birthing experience as a natural women's life experience. If you are looking for a more natural experience (although you can choose birthing drugs with a midwife), I would recommend that as the way to go. They are kind and take the time to get to know you and your birthing plan. However if that does not much natter to you or you have certain health problems (like your heart or epilepsy, etc) a doctor nay be a better route.
Myself, I'll be sticking with my midwife, but giving birth in hospital with both present in case there are complications.
