I wouldn't start buying until you are about 24 weeks are know the gender for sure. a bassinet, carseat, clothes , baby bath, diapers :)
When my daughter had her baby shower, she got so much cool "stuff", which we later realized are just not needed. It is amazing how little you really do need. Everyone LOVES to give baby clothes at the shower, because they are super cute. But honestly, the majority of those cute dresses or pant sets won't be worn. Newborns tend to wear onesies or sleepers (depending on the time of year). I am going to add a couple of items to what Clysta already mentioned that come to mind (these are my personal preferences though):
Sleepers/onesies
Tylenol
Desitin (both of my kids NEVER had a diaper rash, because I used it regularly)
Receiving blankets (for swaddling)
Swing (this is my personal preference, so they aren't always laying flat).
Monitor
Pacifiers
Food/Diapers/Wipes
Again, there were many things that never got used, like bottle warmers, those baby carrier type backpacks, pretty little outfits, diaper caddy's (just put them in the trash, so their room doesn't start smelling), etc.
If u are planning to use a bassinet please please! Look into weight! My sister used one for all her children and only got to use it for bout a month and a half! If u have an 8 lbs baby and the bassinet is only meant to hold say 13 you won't be able to use it very long. So have crib $ on hand. I don't suggest using bassinets over the weight limit they are set for a reason. My sister gave hers to her friend when she had her baby and her friend (she wasn't ready for a child) had the baby in it till she was 5 months I think and it collapsed. Luckily the baby wasn't in it. This was NOT a cheap bassinet either. So please watch the weight!
Some things depend on what you're planning to do. You will for sure need diapers, clothes, wipes and blankets. Most of this you will recieve via baby shower if you have one, but you'll probably wanna buy some more after as well. Depending on how you want to feed, you will need either bottles/formula (formula you could get when baby is born) or breastfeeding supplies. For furniture, you might not need a crib right away. It depends on if you want to co-sleep or not, and if baby will be in the same room as you. If not, then you could get a crib and dresser for their room. If the baby will be with you for some time, you could hold off on a crib for a little bit. I'm co-sleeping with my daughter and using a bassinet set up right next to my bed as well. We probably won't use a crib for months. (this arrangment also works wonders if breastfeeding) some other things you could look at would be a pack n play, and a bouncer chair to put baby in. Just make sure it lays back far enough so baby isn't scrunched up. You'll also need a carseat as well, and possibly a stroller, so you could look into those as a set. Those are the main basics I can really think of for now.
Crib! :) my sister got the 250$ one from target that goes from crib to daybed to a full bed! Its beautiful!
