have 3 brother in laws that i get along with. 2 of the brothers are married to sisters. 1 i get along with and the other is just a biotch. There is nothing that makes that hag happy. Even her kids have a hard time being in the same room with her. She blames her daughter for their financial troubles and lets her know. She had a rough start when she was born. The girl is now in her 20"s!!! I could go on and on about her but i wont!! Her sister, my other sister in law has a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off her back. She had a kidney transplant about a year ago and is still doing great. My other sister in law is very "simple" and i mean that in the nicest way. She doesnt have a mean bone in her body but you have to keep it simple when talking with her. My husbands parents have passed away but i got along with them when they were alive.
My husband's parents are both deceased. I did get along well with my mother in law, she was the sweetest person (I have never met anyone who knew her that didn't like her). My fil was more gruff and disapproved of women who didn't act in archetypal women's roles only, so at times he really disapproved of me. I get along with my sisters in law, but we don't have a lot in common, so we don't put a lot of effort into getting together.
My in laws. Sigh. Well, my mother in law was someone that was very difficult. She had a tough relationship with almost everyone. She could drive me crazy but really, we kind of had our own thing going. She was probably more respectful of my boundaries than the others because my husband and I got married later and the six kids and their spouses before us wore her down. lol She passed of cancer and in the end, I'd say we'd bonded. My father in law had numerous quirks. He is gone too. Both parents were described to me by my husband and his siblings as either flat out abusive or close. But somehow, death has made them all forget about it. they sit at Christmas and tell stories about dad making them get their own instrument to beat their butts with and laugh. ho ho ho ha ha ha, remember when dad beat me with that switch and he broke it on my back? LOL LOL. I kind of just sit through that thinking 'these people are a bit nuts' but I guess when it is all you've ever known . . .
So, now I have in laws in terms of my husband's siblings and their spouses. I keep a little distance for my sanity. LOTS of personalities in the group. And my husband acts like they all rule the world. I keep boundaries, my husband can't say no. It's a bad combination when it comes to in laws. lol But it is what it is. I do my best to do my part but will never win any awards for most involved family member on that side.
We used to do "what do you have in your purse" on the SA social side. That was fun as you cant believe the things women carry!!
