I have the exact same problem, seems to be GERD brought on by primarily coffee and chocolate, and somewhat also by alcohol (wine) and fatty foods.  I find when I minimize the intake of these foods I minimize the phlegm buildup.  I also, however, minimize my enjoyment.  I guess the old gut just can't handle the fun stuff anymore.
