Should I get a portacath?

I was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency several years ago, and have been receiving human plasma derivitive (prolastin and/or aralast) via i.v.  As a result of this weekly infusion, my veins are not as viable as they once were, and every week is increasingly painful.  I am relatively young for this chronic disease (40 yo) and would not want something sticking out of my chest for vein access.  What are the pros and cons of a portacath, and in your opinion, should I have one implanted, as I will continue to be on I.V. treatments for this and soon for my mucocuaneouscandidiasis?

Thanks in advance, Melissa

I also have Alpha-1. I got a port a few years back and am happy with it. It makes my infusions easier for me and now the nurses that give them. I did infuse at home for a the first year and did them with my daughter so it was great.
The downside is they aren't to good to look at if you are as skinny as me because it does show quite a bit. But I don't mind as I'm over 50.
If you don't mind the weekly stick and your veins can take the punishment then I'd keep the way it is. There will come a time down the road that you might want one.

if I may ask what is mucocuaneouscandidiasis?
Will you need IV's indefinitely? Does the portacath have to stick out of your chest?
Will it intefere with your daily life?
