Can Syphilis be transmitted through sperm?

I have been seeing this guy for 6 months. We always had protected sex. 3 weeks ago he called me and said he was positive for Syphilis. He has the chancre on his butt. Not his penis or other area. I gave him oral. Is it possible I caught Syphilis through his body fluids? I did not touch his butt. I already went to get a Syphilis test and it came out negative. I was told the test was probably not accurate because it has not been 3 months.
