I need advice quick,facts

Hi Group\
DID HE CHEAT!!!!
I have been in a committed relationship for the past 5 yrs,or so I believed. My lover and I live together. He was just informed he has HIV as well as second stage syphilis. He is saying he has not been with any other guy since we have been together. From the research I have done as well as asked the Health Dept. all say he has most likely cheated aprox. 6 months to a yr ago.? (by the stages), He has not been sick prior. Now before I throw his butt out on the street. Is there any other ways other that sexual in getting this. and what are they!    DID he cheat!!!

Sorry, i forgot they would screen blood.  I just have that drilled in my head from when the virus was released to the media as an epidemic.

Hi there -

My guess is that he did cheat, and the Health Dept is right about the timing.  To have secondary syphilis, the earliest he would have been infected would be around a couple of months ago, latest probably 6 or 8 months ago, give or take.

There is no non-sexual way he could get syphilis.  You won't get it from eating utensils, toilet seats, etc.  There also isn't any other way to get HIV other than sexual transmission, or sharing needles for drug use.

I'm guessing the Health Dept is offering you tests, right?  Take them up on it, and make sure to get tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia too.

The HIV community can help you with that, and if you have questions about syphilis or other stds, let us know.

Hang in there, ok?

I advise you to post this in the HIV community, they will have the best info for you.

Here is what I know about it...if he does not use drugs (IV needles) then the only way he is going to get HIV is from unprotected sex. Blood is screened so any blood transfusions is not going to result in a HIV infection. Any other way of getting HIV from blood is so very very small that it is in theory possible but no evidence that it can happen.
As for syphilis it is rare in developed countries and for the most part is localized in the gay community. Not trying to say that it only affects the gay community, but that is where most infections occur.

I am not going to say who I think he had sex with or anything like that, but I see no way that he could get HIV and syphilis without having unprotected sex.

But as I said post in the HIV community, you have a lot of people there who have a lot of knowledge about HIV transmission and can give you the best answers.

The doctor who tested us stated to me that the stage of the syphylis as well as the viral load of the HIV suggests that they were contacted at the same time!

But I forgot about the syphillis.  Out of everything I read about std's, they have one thing in common.  They all say that contracting any of them makes a person even more vulnerable to HIV.   I'm sorry.  Have you been tested?

Yes, there are other ways such as blood transfusion, sharing needles in drug use.  If a person has open cuts and gets the infected bodily fluid in the cut, infection is possible.
