Do I have a thyroid issue or not???

I recently have been going through some weird symptoms that my doctors are being very thorough about.  I have had severe heart palpatations, my resting heart rate jumps to over 140, I have tingling in my arms and hands and feet and face, my hands and feet are ice cold and sweaty. I feel like i am either having a heart attack or a panic attack... I am a 35 yr old female and my mom had a goiter that was removed in her 20's and my father had hypothyroid.  Upon having one of these episodes, my husband took me to the ER..  They ran some blood work.. The doc added a throid test  and my TSH was 2.9 and my T4 was .89  .    I ahve been watching my thyroid over the years and was alarmed by these numbers because in Aug of 2008, my TSH was 1.01 and my T4 was 1.11.  In 2005 my TSH was only .75.  How could it have gone form .75 to 2.9?  Now upon researching this, I discovered that most general Drs use a range scale for TSH of .05 to 5.0, but some endocrinologists use a newly revised scale of .03 to 3.0 in which case I am very close to the high range.  When I mentioned it to my general Dr she just said i was still within range and discounted it totally.  They have run me thru 24 hr holter monitors, stress tests, ekg, and echo tests.  I soon will go for a Ct scan of my brain.  Has anyone heard of this new revised range, and any advice would be greatly appreciated as far as my numbers go.  Sometimes I feel real racey, sometimes i feel so sluggish I can hardly move.  Is it hoshimotos, or hypothyroidism?

Why don't the doctors know about the new range?  I mean that is terrible!  Why haven't more doctors embraced it?  It is rediculous.  I am waiting to hear from my genereal doc today as far as what she thinks about the thyroid jump in my blood numbers.  I'll let you know what they say. Thanks for the advice!  This group is really great.

KbennJ,

I am having some of the same neuro type symptoms that you are having. I have been to 13 doctors since July of this year and none of them can seem to give me any answers. I have been worked up for MS and every other neuro disease that you can think of. I was told that I have Epstein Barr virus and vitamin D deficiency. I have had 4 different thyroid tests and all have been normal except for a TSI that I had last Wednesday. It is elevated and I am told that it can be indicative of thyroid disease. I have tingling, numbness, tremors, eye pain, red eyes, eye pain, muscle twitching, etc. I am tired of this and just want my life back. I am not sure that my endocrinologist will even acknowledge these abnormal results. Its pathetic.

Has your doctor tested you for Graves Disease and Hashimoto's both? I would as for that. Yes the new range is .03-3.0. You might also ask for a thyroid ultrasound...what if you have a hot nodule that is producing extra hormone and causes you intermittant hyper episodes? Just a couple of thoughts. Good luck adn let us know!  :)
