help!

we just found out that our 12 year old daughter is hyperthyroid - grave's disease.  her levels were off the charts they say.  her blood pressure was 148/88 and her heart rate was 167!!  her thyroid was HUGE on both sides..."6 by 3". this was at hopkins.  she had her 12 year old physical at the pediatrician on january 12 and NONE of this was picked up.  could this come on so quickly?  we noticed weight loss and agitation and her eyes somewhat protruding (wasn't sure if it was from the weight loss) so i requested blood work asap.  this was 2 weeks after her check up and it was SO positive for a thyroid condition.  her 17 year old sister was diagnosed hypothyroid when she was 12.  her dad is now hypothyroid having initially been hyper at the age of 47 - just 2 years ago.  scarey partis they told us to not let her go to phys ed. in school, not basketball (whick she loves) and basically no physical activity...that she could have a heart attack.  yikes!!!  she was put on 30mg of tapazol and will have her blood tested in 2 weeks.  tell me...how scared should we be?  she  is 5'4 and 1/2 inches tall and weighs 101 lbs.  she received the gardisil shot at her 12 year check up...could this have ANYTHING to do with what is going on?  should this be reported to the gardisil people? fda? should we get the next series of the shot - she is due in march.
help!!

Hi,

given that she has now developed an autoimmune condition I would not be getting her second guardisil shot at this time.  Please do your research on these shots, which seems to have lots of complications(including triggering of immune conditions), and are not really essential (there are other ways of preventing and screening for cervical cancer).

However, I have never heard of guardisil specifically causing hyperthyroid.  YOur family history sounds more suggestive, though not to say it was not triggered by the guardisil.

Follow the drs instructions on the exercise.  It's just for a short time until things get settled down.

Hi....I am 30 and was diagnosed graves' when I was 26...I had rhynoplasty surgery in may and was diagnosed in august...doctor told me that sometimes stress of some kind can "unmask" thyroid conditions...my surgery was May 13 and the very NEXT day started having symptoms, ie. racing heart while resting, sometimes getting up to 260 and muscle weakness.  I could squat down on the ground and stand right back up and then the very next day I could not push myself up at all...as for the Gardisil shot, I have no idea.  I will keep your family in my prayers and good luck!

PS....I like to pass along little tid bits that my doctor has told me...have your daughter drink Gatorade as much as possible....hyper makes you dehydrated all the time and gatorade is LOADED with sodium and potassium, which is what your daughter's body desperately needs.  Hope this helps!
