Help!! Where to file a complaint agaist the Lab

I cannot believe that the lab--labcorp lost my 24H urine sample! it's such a big container, how can they lose it? now look back, how they handled my sample worries me, as this can happen to other patients. they didn't put a label on my sample at the first place, then I asked them, the lady worked there handed me a marker and asked me to put my name there, which i did but i didn't feel that wasn't sufficient enough, so i asked her "should i put my insurance card number or something else there to better identify this sample?", she asked me to put my height there. i thought she should know what she was doing! another thing that was strange to me is that while the nurse was taking my blood sample, i saw my urine sample sitting on their desk(while we were required to keep the sample in the fridge all the time), i reminded them again before i left "there is my urine sample, aren't you going to put it in the fridge?"......though i had the funny feeling when i walked out off the lab, but i never expected, it will get lost!!

does anybody know to what authority i can file a complain? Labcorp should take this seriously as this can happen again to somebody else....

i am very sad that this is happening, today it's a urine sample, tomorrow it could be a more serious mistake.

after talking to my insurance company, i realized my doctor's office is not telling the truth either, they told me labcorp is the only lab i can go to but actually there are a lot more smaller labs in my area that are in my network! i don't understand why doctor's office is doing this! another funny thing about my doctor's office is that, i had to sign off a paper, which stated that all patients are supposed to call the doctor's office on the lab test result, because in the past, they didn't get test result faxed back from the lab, because in this area, there were too many Dr. Chen..... WOW!

i feel like i have a lot of things to complain about the medical system, one chain after another, it feels like we are not only patients who are suffering from our own illness, but also suffering from this stupid system.

I have requested labcorp to send me something in writing to explain what happened, this supervisor i talked to refused, he said he doesn't know what happened. i am really speechless. i told him i am not going to walk away with this type of answer, finally he said he will get back to me again on this within this week. we will see.

thank you all for your support!

I work in a major lab- not Labcorp.
You may have the doctor's office file a complaint with the lab.
In our lab, they really cater to keeping the doctor's (their clients) happy. The lab depends on their business.
We get complaints often from doctor's offices and the lab managers bend over backward to keep then happy.
Lab mistakes do occur, but the response, or lack of it, you are getting is disgraceful.

Keep in mind - you may have to pay for that missing lab test so I would get documents proving the loss.

I am so mad! I just got off  phone with this guy at San Diego and what he had to say is " I don't know what happened to your sample, we couldn't find it and I am sorry, you will have to do it again"....

what? that's what he had found out in 2 days? that he doesn't know what happened?
this wasn't a pleasant conversation, finally he had to admit that the nurse there didn't follow the instructions on labelling samples, but he said" this has nothing to do with losing your sample", apparently he didn't know what caused it but he knows what didn't cause it! this is so ridiculous!!

because of my insurance company, i have to go back to this lab but how can i trust them again?

very frustrating!

my doctor's office notified me this last Friday. i then spoke to a person who is in charge of "customer complaints" at their regional head office in San Diego and he said he would get back to me. i left two voice mail after i spoke to him, he still didn't get back to me yet. what strikes me is that first of all, i looked through their website www.labcop.com and i couldn't find any email address or a phone number for customer service or for you to fill a complaint. i heard at the lab that they send all samples to San Diego so that's why i called there, but there is no menu on the company greetings for you to be receptionist and she connected me to a guy, however, i called there three times, all be connected to the voice mail directly, the first time, he called back very quick. I wonder, why they are making it so difficult for you to reach somebody to file a complaint?

my doctor's office told me that this is the first time they have experienced this, which is a relief to me but i am not sure i trust that comment 100%. if i don't hear back from San Diego tomorrow, i will have to take other actions.

and you are right, this is about our health and we have the very right to protect that! I'd like to think that labcorp is a reputable company, however, if there is a flaw in their system, they should appreciate that i am taking this action to forth them to re-think.

How frustrating!  That test is pain to redo.  But really I'm not too surprised.  When I witness stuff it makes me wonder how much more we don't see.  Between mistakes and bad attitudes, it's a wonder...

What bothers me, especially with some clerks, is that they don't seem to realize that you are there during a time you're not feeling well.  It's usually not a good day.

Maybe their website has a place to contact them.

When I've tried to bring up stuff like this, it's usually met with a 'oh well, so what,' or 'I'm sorry, that's too bad,' attitude.  Hopefully, you'll have better luck.

Thanks for sharing this.  Please post an update.

They wanted your height on a urine sample???

I think you should do this.

Go back to the lab that you handed the sample to.
Ask to speak to the department head, or manager.
If it's a small hospital, talk to the hospital administrator.

Tell them of your experience, and your concerns. Tell them you do not feel some of their employees are being very attentive to details, and you do not appreciate the fact that someone in the lab has no idea how to even label your sample correctly, and that asking you to do it yourself is unacceptable.

Ask them to look into the matter and make sure that training is offered so such things do not happen again and RUIN THEIR REPUTATION. Be nice, be calm, be firm. If you feel like you got brushed off, go directly to the Administrator's office and ask to file a complaint.

Someone there is running the department for a profit, and they do not want a bad reputation or a complaint with the BBB or the state medical board.

Sadly, it is common.  I worked in a gyn office and plenty of samples had to be re-taken--inconvenient samples, because labs lost things.

Sorry it happened to you--it really can be a pain.
