I am 33 years old and I have two kids ages 4 and 5. 4 years ago I found out I have Hyporthyroid. I went to the Doctor and got meds. My husband and I have been trying to have a nother baby for the pass year and a half. Still nothing. Can you really get pregnant? maria
Hi.
findd another doctor. It is not true that you can't have a baby, unless you have other medical conditions that you did not tell us about.
But, it is critical for your and the baby's health that you get your thyroid treated and properly managed BEFORE you try to have children. Sounds like you are still young so you still have time to get things sorted out.
I am 38, Hypothyroid and successfully pregnant (now 24 weeks) with my first. So far all looks good!

I agree with Dogdancing. You have to get your hormones to normal levels before you should or could conceive. Irregular menstrual periods make it harder to conceive(obviously) and you should be healthy to begin with. You would want a window of a radioactive free body before you concieve also. I couldnt get pregnant until everything was normal. good luck
You said "I had the radiation pill in 2003, but never really stuck to the medicine."
were you then tested and found to be HYPOthyroid? Was this a pill for scan or pill to destroy thyroid?
EITHER way dear you may have caused irreparable damage to your body. Untreated HYPERthyroid and cause heart damage. Untreated HYPOthyoidism can just flat out KILL you.
Hyperthyoidism casues infertility. Yes you can get pregnate hyperthyroid, I did so twice and carried to term. BUT you should get your illness undercontrol and medically stable prior to trying to conceive.
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT for the health and viability of your future unborn.
Untreated hyperthyroidism can cause miscarrage in the first trimester, and last trimester, it can cause the fetus to not grow. and not to mention what it does to your heart/body while you are trying to keep the pregnancy.
You can get pregnate on the PTU and carry to term and breastfeed while on it. The side effects of the med are less damaging then going without.
Thyroid issues are life threatening. Its that simple. Treat them seriously, take your meds as prescibed and get your labs done on time. Read up about your illness.
You as a future mother will need to know this to keep yourself healthy and also teach any children about it, as thyroid issues run in families. (hypothyroidism in children causes mental retardation).
Get copies of you labs, ask questions, research.
peace be the journey
