Hyperthryoid and Trying to Conceive

Dear Dr. Lupo:

I am searching for some information regarding Hyperthyroidism and try to conceive.

I was borderline hyper before conceiving our first child, but leveled out very early in the pregnancy.  About 9 months after having my daughter, I was officially diagnosed as having a hyperthyroid.  I am currently on 50mg daily of PTU.  My GP stated that it is 'safe' for pregnancy; however, I know PTU is a class D drug.  I was advised by my previous OB (we moved out of state) to wean off the PTU prior to trying to conceive our second child.  I am not quite sure which way to go at this point.  I know there are risks either way, but wondered what the general practice was for someone suffering from hyperthyroidism and trying to conceive and pregnancy.

Thanks for your time!
Amy

I have had two hyperthyroid pregnancies. PTU usage both times. It is VERY important for  your health/babies health to have your thyoid condition UNDERCONTROL before/during/after your pregnancy.

Yes PTU is class D, dont let that scare you. Hyperthyroidism can cause miscarragies in the first AND last trimesters. The risk of the PTU is less than the risk of being Hyper.

You are on a very low dose of PTU. Im scratching my head why they want to wean ya off prior to TTC??? HyperT can cause infertility! You stand a better chance of getting pregnate on the med.

Your health is important too. The effects of hyperthyroidism can cause long term damage to you.  Don't let it stop you from making baby # 2.

Peace be the journey
